Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) is kicking off its annual fundraising campaign with an event Tuesday at the Wiseacre Brewery from 5 to 7 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Young Lawyer Committee of the Campaign for Equal Justice and the Memphis Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, will feature food, drinks and a silent auction. Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton is expected to make a special appearance. A donation of $20 is requested. For more information or to RSVP contact Sarah Pazar.

The Memphis Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society will present a seminar on campaign finance regulation on Tuesday at The Madison Hotel. The Memphis Bar Association Access to Justice Committee is sponsoring a legal clinic Saturday  from 8 a.m. to noon and volunteers are needed. The legal clinic, which will be held at the Shelby County Jail, will provide help to incarcerated veterans who have civil legal questions about issues such as disability compensation, child support issues, advance directives, eligibility for benefits and outstanding debts. Tennessee attorneys are invited to join in celebrating the retirement of Tennessee Supreme Court Justice William C. Koch Jr. at a July 7 event in the Supreme Court Building in Nashville, beginning at 11 a.m. Justice Koch announced earlier this year that he is retiring in order serve as dean of Nashville School of Law. RSVP to Lisa Hazlett-Wallace by July 1.

A group of Crossville-area conservative Republicans will host a pre-election meeting with local, state and federal Republican candidates, including those running for judicial posts. The event will be held at St. George Marina in Fairfield Glade on June 28 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The format for the afternoon meeting will provide voters with a brief description of the requirements and duties for each political and judicial office. A picnic lunch plate will be available for $7 per person. The Crossville Chronicle has more.

The YWCA is urging Tennesseans to take a stand against racism and join the organization as it celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, District Attorney-elect Glenn Funk and others will speak at noon on July 9 at the Church Street Park, 600 Church St. Live music, food trucks and ice cream will be available.

CASA Monroe will benefit from this year’s "Chip in for a Child,” an annual golf tournament sponsored by Fritts and Associates and Fritts Financial in Knoxville. The tournament will take place Monday at Rarity Bay Golf Club, beginning at 11:30 a.m. It is $75 to play, which includes golf, a boxed lunch, giveaways, and a master’s buffet dinner. Prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin, longest drive and a chipping contest. Hole sponsorships also are available. Knoxnews has details on the event.

The Legal Aid Society today announced its summer schedule for the People’s Law School, a free program that provides an overview of legal issues that a typical person might face. Taught by Legal Aid Society attorneys and volunteer attorneys in Nashville, the weekly, one-hour classes will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays at Cohn Learning Center, 4805 Park Ave. and at Wright Middle School, 180 Mccall St. For more information, visit the Nashville Community Education Commission website.

The Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) and the Informed Voters Project are co-sponsoring a Judicial Forum on June 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in Memphis. The purpose of this event will be to provide a forum for Shelby County judicial candidates to speak directly to voters and to provide voters with information about the judicial election process prior to Election Day on Aug. 7.
