The Disability Law & Advocacy Center of Tennessee will host an awareness event Aug. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nashville City Club, 201 4th Ave. N., Nashville. The Disability Employment Awareness Luncheon will feature a keynote address by Randy Lewis, a retired Walgreens executive, who created thousands of full-time jobs for people with disabilities. The event is designed to help employers navigate new laws requiring the hiring and advancement of people with disabilities and create workplaces where disability inclusion is possible and profitable. Tickets are $150 for corporate attendees and $75 for non-profit leaders.

Top state substance abuse officials will meet in Chattanooga this Thursday to discuss the problem of prescription drug abuse in Tennessee, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports. E. Douglas Varney, commissioner of the state Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, will join Criminal Court Judge Caroll Ross of the 10th Judicial District Recovery Court, Paul Fuchcar of the Council for Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services and others at the event, set for 2 p.m. at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga’s University Center, 642 E. Fifth St. In announcing the summit, which is open to the public, Varney said, “The abuse of prescription drugs, specifically opioids, is an epidemic in Tennessee, with disastrous and severe consequences to Tennesseans of every age.”

Twenty-third Judicial District Attorney General Dan Alsobrooks yesterday announced that he will retire effective Aug. 31 after 36 years in public service. There will be a reception for Alsobrooks on July 17 from 5-7 p.m. at the Clement Railroad Museum in Dickson. The public is invited to stop by and talk with Alsobrooks and his family about his years of service. The Tennessean has more.

The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) and the League of Women Voters of Knoxville/Knox County will hold a forum on July 17 to inform voters about their choices among judicial candidates competing in the general election. A retirement reception will be held for Third Judicial District Circuit Court Judge John K. Wilson July 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Greene County Courthouse. The courthouse is located at 101 S. The Nashville Public Library will show the documentary “Soundtrack for a Revolution” tomorrow from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The film celebrates freedom songs and explores how these anthems had the power to sustain the civil rights movement during its darkest hours. It is a unique mix of archival footage, interviews with civil rights leaders and musical performances from artists such as John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean and The Roots.

The Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence is offering an advocacy training July 9-10 in Memphis. The event, which is free, will take place at The Urban Child Institute, 600 Jefferson Ave., Memphis 38105. The training will focus on the history of violence against women, practical advocacy techniques, prevention, vicarious trauma and more. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The program will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday. Register online to attend.

The Nashville Chapter of NALS will host the 2nd Annual NALS After Hours Silent Auction on July 10 to benefit the work of the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell and Berkowitz, 211 Commerce St., Suite 800. Last year, the auction raised $3,350 for the agency and sponsors are hoping to top that amount with a range of items including autographed memorabilia from the Nashville Predators and Tennessee Titans, hotel stays, wine and restaurant gift certificates. McMinn County will hold a retirement reception in honor of General Sessions Court Judge Judge James Watson from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The reception will take place in the Grand Jury Room, located on the second floor of the McMinn County Courthouse. The public is invited to attend. The Daily Post Athenian reports.
