The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) and the League of Women Voters of Knoxville/Knox County will hold a forum to inform voters about their choices among judicial candidates competing in the general election. All candidates have been invited to participate in the forum, which will take place tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the South College Auditorium, 400 Goodys Lane, Knoxville. Seating is limited. The Nashville Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will hold its 17th Annual Carbolic Smoke Ball this Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Reverb Room on the second floor of the Hard Rock Café in downtown Nashville. The event will feature a cocktail party with live music from the 90s cover band, "My So Called Band," heavy hors d'oeuvres, casino gaming and an open bar. Proceeds from this year's event will benefit two non-profit organizations: CASA Nashville & Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee. Tickets are $65 per person in advance, $75 at the door.

Nashville lawyers will gather for the Fourth Annual Law Firm Trivia Challenge on July 28 at the Crow’s Nest in Green Hills. The event will start at 6 p.m., with registration opening at 5:30 p.m. Teams should be comprised of five members. The entry fee per team is $250 with all proceeds benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Waddey Patterson has won two of the last three years and is looking for another win, organizers say. A formal investiture ceremony to install Judge Jeffrey Bivins as the newest member of the Tennessee Supreme Court will take place Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Franklin Theatre in downtown Franklin. The Administrative Office of the Courts announced on Friday that Gov. Bill Haslam will perform the swearing in. A reception will follow. The theater is located at 419 Main St.

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association is meeting today and tomorrow in Nashville for its 2014 Southeast Regional Conference. The Tennessee Asian Pacific American Bar Association (TAPABA) is serving as host. Speakers at the conference include former U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. The Memphis Saturday Legal Clinic will be held tomorrow (July 12) from 10 a.m. to noon at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library. Volunteer attorneys, especially with family law experience, are still needed. Those interested in helping are encouraged to arrive by 10 a.m. In addition, lawyers are needed for the weekly Courthouse Advice & Counsel Clinic (formerly known as the Attorney of the Day Clinic) held every Thursday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in Room 134 of the Shelby County Courthouse. Volunteers talk to pro se litigants in General Sessions Court about procedural issues and how to present their case. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Tennessee Heartland, which serves Blount County, will host a forum for juvenile court candidates Kenlyn Foster and Susan Rushing at 6 p.m. Monday at the Blount County campus of Pellissippi State Community College. Each candidate will have an opportunity to address the group and answer questions from the audience. The public is invited and no RSVP is necessary. The Daily Times has more.

Washington, D.C., based nonprofit Justice at Stake is hosting a first-of-its-kind event to bring together state advocates for fair courts, those working on issues that depend on access to fair courts and the national groups that support their work. The Fair Courts State Summit will take place July 27-28 in the nation's capital. Presentations will address how state courts impact issues lawyers care about, the current political landscape and its impact on the courts and how to talk about fair courts issues. Speakers include Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady, former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs and from Tennessee, Tracey George, a professor at Vanderbilt University Law School, who will join a panel looking at groups attempting to politicize the courts and how they are organized and funded.
