Live Law 6 – a live storytelling event about the ways the law and music collide, and how that collision has changed Nashville’s Music Row forever – will be held tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Central. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Live podcast starts at 7 p.m. The event, co-hosted by the Life of the Law podcast, Pursuit Magazine and Nashville Public Radio, will take place at the W.O. Smith Music School in Nashville. Among those speaking will be Nashville music insider Harold Bradley, who founded Studio A with his brother Owen and Chet Atkins. The studio was recently sold despite protests from those in the artist community who wanted to preserve it as an historical site. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

On Aug. 19 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Lipscomb University’s Institute for Law, Justice and Society and St. James Missionary Baptist Church will host a general legal advice clinic for underserved individuals in Nashville. The event will be held at the church at 600 28th Ave., North. Attorney volunteers are needed to work with clients. No specific legal expertise is required. The TBA is joining with the Jackson Madison County Bar Association, the Anne Schneider Chapter of the Lawyers’ Association for Women and Memphis Association of Women Attorneys to host a reception for three appellate judges on Aug. 21 in Jackson. The event will honor Court of Appeals Judge Holly M. Kirby, who will step down from the court to take a seat on the Tennessee Supreme Court, as well as Judges Judge David R. Farmer and Alan E. Highers, who are retiring from the court at the end of August. The Forensic Institute for Research and Education (FIRE) is hosting a free two-day conference on death scene investigations Aug. 13-14 on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. The program, sponsored through a federal Department of Justice grant, will address topics such as the role of the medical examiner, forensic anthropology, mass fatalities, drug overdose cases and child death investigations. The Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (TACDL) will hold its 41st Annual Meeting Aug. 1-2 at the University of Memphis School of Law. Speakers include TACDL President Mike Whalen, 30th Judicial District Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee, Kansas District Court Judge Joe D. The East Ridge Ruritan Club will be sponsoring a judicial forum next Thursday, Chattanoogan.com reports. The event will be held at the East Ridge Elementary School Gym from 6 to 8 p.m. and feature candidates for city judge and court clerk. Attendees will be allowed to ask questions of the candidates. Local attorney Kellyann Mulroony Johnson will moderate the forum. Three candidates are running for judge: incumbent Arvin Reingold, Ryan Hanzelik and Cris Helton. For the first time the city also choose between two – Patricia Cassidy and Richard “Cubby” Owens – for the newly elected position of court clerk.

The Memphis-based Community Legal Center (CLC) will mark its 20th anniversary with a celebration on July 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home of Leslie and Renelle Ballin, 254 Cloister Green Lane, Memphis 38120. The event will feature a presentation of the center’s plans for the future as well as a celebration of past accomplishments. The CLC provides pro bono legal services and educational programs to those who are not eligible for assistance from Memphis Area Legal Services.

The 8th Annual ACC-SEC Alumni Golf Tournament benefitting CASA of Nashville will be held Aug. 8 at Gaylord Springs Golf Links from noon to 7:30 p.m. Registration for the four-man scramble includes a full lunch, 18 holes of golf, prizes and a dinner program. You do not have to be an ACC or SEC alum to play, just come out and have fun while helping CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) in its mission of advocating for abused and neglected children.

The public is invited to attend a forum on Criminal Justice and Mental Health “A Mental Health Court for Hamilton County,” next Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center in Chattanooga. “A mental health court in Hamilton County will significantly reduce costs and improve public safety by connecting mentally ill defendants with community resources,” Judge Christie Sell said. “The goal is to reduce the likelihood of continued crime by stabilizing these individuals, who cost more than 7 times more to jail and who are subject to worsening mental conditions when incarcerated.” The Chattanoogan has more.

Lipscomb University's Institute for Law, Justice and Society will host Justice William C. Koch, Jr. July 24 at 6:30 p.m. for a Conversation of Significance as he retires from the Tennessee Supreme Court and begins work as Dean of the Nashville School of Law. The conversation with Justice Koch will touch on the future of the Nashville School of Law, Justice Koch's career in the judiciary, judicial independence, the upcoming judicial retention elections, and the difficult legal issues that are on the horizon in Tennessee. This event is free and open to the public.
