Former TBA President and Memphis attorney Bill Haltom will speak about his new book “The Other Fellow May Be Right: The Civility of Howard Baker” during a luncheon hosted the University of Tennessee Baker Center Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Toyota Auditorium. The Community Legal Forum will host a forum discussion tonight at 7 p.m. in the Cleveland Bradley County public library’s Community Room. Three prominent Cleveland attorneys will openly debate probate and living trusts, as well as their need, their costs and their relevance. Panel moderator Jack Tapper has directed the standing-room only legal forum series since its inception. The series is a civic partnership between the Bradley County Bar Association, Bradley County Law Library Commission, the Cleveland Bradley County Library and the Bradley County Commission, the Cleveland Banner reports.

The TBA Access to Justice Committee, in partnership with the TBA Corporate Counsel Section and the Tennessee Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, will host the Ninth Annual Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Gala March 7, 2015, at the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville. Law firms, corporations and individuals are invited to support the event by becoming sponsors or purchasing tickets. Presentation of the 2015 Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative (CCPBI) awards – which recognize the Tennessee law firm and corporate legal department that best exemplify a commitment to access to justice – also will take place at the event. CCPBI engages corporate counsel and in-house lawyers in pro bono work. Since the inception of the program, more than $425,000 has been raised and distributed to organizations across the state that connect corporate lawyers to local pro bono projects.

Herbert H. Slatery III will be sworn in Wednesday as Tennessee’s 27th Attorney General. The ceremony will take place at 11:45 a.m. in the Old Supreme Court Chambers at the Tennessee State Capitol. Gov. Bill Haslam and Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Lee will administer the oath of office. Slatery previously served as legal counsel to Haslam and was in private practice in Knoxville. Download the announcement.

The ABA is holding a free telephonic roundtable Wednesday at noon Central to discuss how states can bring together various stakeholders – including the judiciary and courts, legal aid and the organized bar – to address access to justice challenges. The discussion will be led by the ABA’s Access to Justice and Children's Rights Litigation committees. Harrison McIver with Memphis Area Legal Services also will address the group. The Women's Political Collaborative of Tennessee will host a “Yes on 2” luncheon tomorrow with former Tennessee Supreme Court Justice William Koch and recently sworn-in Justice Holly Kirby. The pair will be discussing the issues surrounding proposed Amendment 2 and the importance of voting to keep Tennessee's courts fair and unbiased. The event, which is being held in partnership with the law firms of Adams and Reese, Waller and Waddey Patterson, will take place at the downtown Nashville Doubletree Hotel at 315 4th Ave. North. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin at noon. Tickets are $20 per person.

The semi-annual National Drug Take-Back is a chance for citizens to safely and legally dispose of unused prescription drugs, keeping them out of the environment and the hands of children, as well as those who might illegally sell or consume the drugs. In Bradley County, the event will take place Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Criminal Investigations Division entrance, on the south side of the Bradley County Judicial Center. This event has been coordinated by the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration. The Chattanoogan has the story.

The 15th Annual Shelby Bottoms Boogie 5K run/walk and 15K race will be held Saturday at the Dripping Bird Activity Area in Shelby Bottoms Park. For the seventh consecutive year, this Nashville Striders race event benefits CASA Nashville. Registration is $30 in advance and $35 on race day, with day-of registration and packet pickup beginning at 6 a.m. The 5K will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the 15K will begin at 7:40 a.m. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in various age groups for both the 5K and 15K categories.
