The Knoxville Family Justice Center is conducting a poster campaign to draw attention to domestic violence issues and focus on resources for those in abusive relationships. Volunteers will distribute their posters throughout Knoxville and Knox County Saturday. More than 60 organizations are hoping to spread awareness about domestic abuse from partners and within the family unit. Volunteers for the campaign will meet 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. at the center located at 400 Harriet Tubman St. Knoxnews has more.

Operation Stand Down will hold its Fall 2014 event on Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Greater Bethel AME Church in Nashville. Volunteers will be on hand to provide assistance with veterans’ benefits, housing, employment, health care, food stamps, legal needs, haircutting, clothing and other services. Veterans may pre-register at the Operation Stand Down office or the Nashville VA Homeless Program before Nov. 14. Transportation will be provided from several pick up points. Rita Sanders Geier, former associate to the University of Tennessee chancellor and retired senior fellow at the Howard Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, will speak Friday about her involvement in desegregating the state of Tennessee’s higher education system and her experiences as an African American trailblazer making strides in the fields of civil rights, diversity and equal access to higher education. The presentation is a part of the Trailblazer Series sponsored by the school’s Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Commission for Blacks. It will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Hodges Library Auditorium.

Lipscomb University in Nashville will hold an Institutes Preview Day this Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Ezell Center. CASA Monroe presents a Festival of Trees celebration to raise funds for the recruitment, training and support of volunteer advocates. The celebration includes three distinct events: a gala with dinner, dancing and silent auction on Nov. 14, a breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Clause on Nov. 15, and a holiday craft sale that will offer decorated trees, wreaths and centerpieces for sale. The Knoxville Barr Association will offer its 2014 LawTalk Program Nov. 7 and 8 for area residents. This year’s program will cover two topics: (1) wills and estate planning, and (2) legal protections for the elderly, disabled and their caregivers. On both days, the wills presentation will take place from 9 to 10:45 a.m. followed by the legal protections presentation from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The first session will take place at the O’Connor Senior Center, 611 Winona St. The Nov. 8 session will be held at Fellowship Church, 8000 Middlebrook Pike. Middle Tennessee State University’s annual Mid-South Invitational Mock Trial Tournament will be held Nov. 14-15 on the school’s Murfreesboro campus. Some 60 teams are expected to compete and attorneys are needed to serve as judges. Trial rounds will take place Nov. 14 from 1 to 5:15 p.m. and from 5:15 to 9:40 p.m., and on Nov. 15 from 8 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. and from 12:15 to 4:40 p.m. Details, including a registration form, are online. Best-selling author Lawrence Cunningham will visit the University of Tennessee College of Law on Monday to discuss his new book "Berkshire Beyond Buffet: The Enduring Value of Values." Joining Cunningham will be UT Law alumnus Jim Clayton, the founder and former CEO of Clayton Homes Inc., which Berkshire Hathaway acquired in 2003. Clayton established the Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial Law at UT Law. Admission is free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to RSVP to Sophia Brown before Nov. 3. The Shelby County District Attorney’s office is recruiting mentors to work with middle school students, parents and schools to decrease habitual truancy, reduce student contact with the juvenile justice system and reduce youth involvement in criminal activity and gangs. The office is sponsoring a training program this Saturday for those who are interested. The session will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Office of Youth Services and Community Affairs, 315 S. Hollywood at Central.
