Lawyers interested in learning more about President Obama’s recent immigration executive actions should plan to attend a free CLE this Thursday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Bar Center. The session is sponsored by Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON), Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS) and the TBA and its Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative. Those in attendance will receive an overview of new and expanded administrative relief available to undocumented immigrants. Nashville Mayor Karl Dean also will be on hand to speak about how the program is impacting Nashville communities. Register by email or contact Bethany Jackson with any questions.

The Juvenile Court of Memphis & Shelby County will hold a public forum Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. to update residents on its progress in meeting the goals of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Memorandum of Agreement, which is designed to address issues such as the disparate treatment of black youths, the high number of youth transferred to adult court, and due process rights violations. The meeting will take place at the Memphis Public Library on Poplar Ave.

The Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) will hold its annual banquet and silent auction Jan. 29 at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis. In his new book, attorney and author Jim Emison writes about the June 20, 1940, Brownsville murder of Elbert Williams, the first NAACP member in the nation known to have been killed because of his civil rights work. Emison will talk about the murder and his upcoming book on Community Feedback WKFX 96 FM on Feb. 1 at 9 a.m. He will also appear on Prime Time Drive, News Talk Radio 101.5 FM on Feb. 3 at 4:30 p.m.

Chattanooga attorney and author Graham Swafford will be featured at a book signing at Barnes and Noble tomorrow at 2 p.m. at their Gunbarrell Road location. On Friday, Vanderbilt University kicks off a weekend full of commemorative events with a luncheon. Events at the university culminate Monday with a keynote address by former U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young and a candlelight vigil.
