Singer-songwriter Andy Sneed, an attorney with Kizer & Black in Maryville, will play an “anti-Valentine’s Day” concert tomorrow night at Southland Books and Café. He’s chosen the J. Geils Band classic "Love Stinks" as the opener for the evening, he told The Daily Times.

General Sessions Judge Christie Sell will encourage female students to run for student government and political office during an appearnace next week at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. Sell will appear Wednesday as part of the  Elect Her – Campus Women Win program. A collaboration between the American Association of University Women and Running Start, Elect Her encourages women to run for office as a way to diminish the longstanding political leadership gender gap,  The Chattanoogan reports.

The Knoxville Bar Association will hold Community Law Schools on March 6 and 7. The public education programs will offer free seminars on topics that include debt, mortgage foreclosures, wills and advance directives. The sessions will be held March 6 at the O’Connor Senior Center, 611 Winona St., and March 7 at Fellowship Church, 8000 Middlebrook Pk. High school juniors and seniors are invited to explore the benefits of a legal education at “Discovering the Law,” an event sponsored by the University of Tennessee College of Law on Feb. 20. Directed by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), the DisoverLaw.org campaign is designed to “encourage racially and ethnically diverse students to discover career opportunities in law and choose a path in undergraduate school to help them succeed.” To register, contact the UT Law admissions office, (865) 974-4131, by Feb. 18.

Students at the University of Tennessee College of Law will provide assistance with personal tax returns on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7:30 p.m. between Feb. 18 and April 15. The effort is part of the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which offers free tax help and electronic filing for those making $53,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited-English-speakers. Film, television and stage actor Hill Harper will speak on “Youth and Justice” at East Tennessee State University this Thursday, WJHL reports. His free public lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium. Perhaps best known as coroner Dr. Sheldon Hawkes in “CSI: NY," Harper now stars in the USA Network spy drama “Covert Affairs.” Off the screen, he has founded the Manifest Your Destiny Foundation, which is dedicated to empowering underserved youth through mentorship, scholarship and grant programs. He holds a law degree from Harvard as well as a master’s degree from the university’s Kennedy School of Government.

The Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence is offering a legal advocacy training in Memphis on Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Topics to be covered include the basics of civil and criminal law in domestic and sexual violence cases, the differing roles of advocates and attorneys and benefits for immigrant victims of domestic violence and sex crimes. Robin Kimbrough, legal counsel for the Coalition, will conduct the training, which will be held at The Urban Child Institute at 600 Jefferson Ave. Attendance is free but registration is required. City of Memphis Mayor A C Wharton will deliver the keynote address at the 15th Annual Julian Blackshear Jr. Scholarship Gala, which recognizes and celebrates students and alumni who have positively impacted the University of Tennessee College of Law through their commitment to diversity. Presented in partnership with the Black Law Students Association, the gala will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Holiday Inn World’s Fair Park, 525 Henley St., Knoxville 37902. Middle Tennessee State University will host a discussion next Tuesday on the First Amendment aspects of last summer’s unrest in Ferguson, Missouri. Speakers include St. Louis Post-Dispatch photographer and videographer David Carson, St. Louis 21st Ward Alderman Antonio French and USA Today reporter Yamiche Alcindor. The trio will provide insights into media coverage and criminal justice elements of a high-profile news story such as the Ferguson protests. The event, “From the Front Lines of Ferguson: Covering the New Civil Rights Movement,” will begin at 7 p.m. in the Tucker Theater and is free to the public. The Tennessean has more.

Former President Bill Clinton will be in Nashville in June to speak at a conference for health insurance professionals, the Tennessean reports. Nashville politicos are questioning whether he will also use the trip to offer a hand to Nashville mayoral candidate Jeremy Kane, a friend of Clinton’s who will be entering the homestretch of his race.
