The deadline to register for volunteer attorney training has been extended to Friday. Hosted by the Access to Justice Commission and The Faith & Justice Alliance, the April 27 event is designed for pro bono volunteer attorneys to prepare them to assist low income Tennesseans in high needs areas of law. The University of Tennessee College of Law will hold its annual Novak Auction on April 20 at noon. Dean Doug Blaze and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Katrice Morgan will serve as emcees of the spring fundraising event, which consists of a live and silent auction, music, entertainment and food. Proceeds will support two new law student scholarships: a public interest scholarship named in honor of Dean Blaze and a scholarship honoring extraordinary leadership and involvement.

Nashville attorney Joanne Bregman will be the Chattanooga Tea Party’s guest speaker tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at The Century Club Banquet Hall, 3221 Harrison Pike, the Chattanoogan reports. Bregman has been involved in policy work at the Tennessee legislature and will speak on the constitutional relationship between federal, state and local governments, especially involving refugee resettlement programs.

A free legal clinic will be held at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The Memphis Bar Association’s Access to Justice Committee and Memphis Area Legal Services host the free, open-to-the-public event the second Saturday of each month. Doug Blaze, dean of the University of Tennessee College of Law will deliver the keynote address during the college’s spring Commencement hooding ceremony on May 8. The college’s students recommended Blaze as the keynote speaker for what will be the final hooding ceremony in which he participates as dean of the College of Law. In 2014, Blaze announced his decision to step down to return to teaching full-time and to serve as director of the college’s new Institute for Professional Leadership, which he co-founded.

Registration is open for the "Re-Visioning Justice in America” Conference, which will be held April 17 through 19 at Vanderbilt Divinity School. Presentations, panels and key note speeches will address a variety of topics, including racial discrimination in sentencing, the business of mass incarceration, the Cradle to Prison Pipeline and more. Keynote speakers include civil rights lawyer, advocate and legal scholar Michelle Alexander and Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative.
