The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department will host an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the county's new jail on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Opening ceremonies for the state-of-the-art, 400-bed facility are expected to start at 1:15 p.m. and feature a host of current and former officials who took part in the years-long process of planning, financing and constructing the $22 million project.

The Blount County Substance Abuse Prevention Action Team and the Fifth Judicial District Drug Task Force will once again host Drug Take-Back Day. Residents can bring old medicines on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to the Blount County Justice Center where the drugs will be disposed of properly, the Daily Times reports.

As part of its 84th anniversary celebration, Carnival Memphis will salute the Mid-South Legal Industry during its annual Business & Industry Salute Luncheon May 5 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Honorees include Lewis Donelson, Judge Julia Gibbons, Mike Cody and Shepherd Tate, as well as eight area law firms. Joseph Ingle will discuss and sign his book, Slouching Toward Tyranny: Mass Incarceration, Death Sentences, and Racism, Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Parnassus Books in Nashville. As a pastor to Death Row inmates across the South, Ingle's book "is part personal experience, part history: the history of systematic destruction of minorities in America, from colonial days to now, by physical slaughter and by legal and judicial means."

A reception honoring Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Bob Martineau Jr. will be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Gatlinburg Overlook, 553 Greystone Heights Rd. A retirement reception for Chief Magistrate Judge Dennis H. Inman will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Greeneville Federal Courthouse sponsored by the Northeast Tennessee Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Inman was appointed to the position in November 1995 after serving as chancellor in the state's Third Judicial District, which includes Greene, Hamblen, Hancock and Hawkins counties. Jasper attorney and author Graham Swafford will be featured at a book signing on Saturday at Barnes and Noble’s Vanderbilt location, 2501 West End Ave in Nashville. The event begins at 2 p.m. Swafford’s book “Go to the Pound and Get A Dog … Then Learn to Fly an Airplane: Life’s Lessons Acquired by a Country Lawyer From the Courthouse Square to the Supreme Court” was reviewed in the November Tennessee Bar Journal.

Girls Inc. will honor Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge Christie Sell during its 11th annual UnBought & UnBossed Awards Luncheon April from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center. The awards program honors 10 local women each year who, through their career achievements or community service, have made a positive impact on the lives of Hamilton County girls and women.
