Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) will host three clinics next week. A Kingsport Bar Association Free Legal Advice Clinic will be held Tuesday from 5-6:30 p.m. at the V.O. Dobbins Community Center in Kingsport. A Legal Clinic on "Being an Estate Executor" will take place Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Jonesborough Senior Center. On Friday, the TriPride Event "Know Your LGBTQ+ Rights" webinar will be held for residents of Tennessee and Virginia, starting at 1 p.m. All times eastern. The University of Memphis Cecil C Humphreys School of Law is hosting the American Moot Court Association (AMCA) National Tournament this weekend and is seeking volunteers to serve as judges on Saturday. Volunteer judges will ask questions, evaluate arguments and provide feedback to college student participants. Two-hour time slots available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST and from 1-3 p.m. CST. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands, the Nashville Metro Office of Conservatorship Management and Belmont University College of Law are joining forces to offer a free conservatorship training course. The event will take place on Jan. 21 from 12:15-1:15 p.m. CST at Belmont Law. Lunch will be provided. The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis is hosting its annual King Day Celebration on Jan. 20, with free museum admission all day and special activities in person and virtually. The event also marks the launch of the museum's yearlong observance themed "Community Over Chaos," highlighting pivotal anniversaries in civil rights history, including the 60th anniversary year of the Selma March and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. As part of the celebration, the Memphis Bar Association's Access to Justice Committee and law firm Butler Snow are sponsoring an onsite legal information table and are requesting information from legal service providers to share with attendees. Materials, updated brochures or flyers, including those with substantive legal information or announcements about clinics or other services, can be shared digitally or in hard copy. The next legal clinic for veterans in Knoxville will take place Jan. 8, 2025, from 12-1 p.m. EST at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. This is a general advice clinic sponsored by the Knoxville Bar Association, KBA Barristers, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, the University of Tennessee College of Law, the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office and the local Veterans Affairs office. The Tennessee Department of Revenue will host a free webinar on Dec. 17 on the consumer use tax. All Tennessee residents, as well as businesses operating in the state, must pay use tax when goods are purchased from outside the state of Tennessee and brought or shipped into the state and the seller did not collect sales tax on the purchase.
