Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, plans to be in Murfreesboro Aug. 10, according to a release from the Rutherford County Republican Party. The Daily News Journal reports that Cruz will participate in a town-hall meeting at 11 a.m. at Patterson Park Community Center sponsored by the local Republican Party as a public service offered to all GOP candidates. The TBA will honor Memphis attorney Randall D. “Randy” Noel during a reception at the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago on Saturday. The event will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Gold Room of the Fairmont Hotel. Noel, with Butler Snow, is a past TBA president and a past Tennessee delegate to the ABA House of Delegates. Support is provided by the University of Tennessee College of Law, University of Memphis School of Law, Belmont University College of Law and Vanderbilt University Law School. All Tennessee lawyers are invited to attend.

TBA President Bill Harbison will be among Tennessee leaders speaking to attendees at this year’s Equal Justice University, set for Sept. 2-4 in Murfreesboro. Harbison, who was part of a team that challenged Tennessee law on marriage equality, will provide an update on legal issues in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same sex marriage across the country. He also will speak at the Leadership Lunch. Other prominent Tennesseans scheduled to address the conference are Supreme Court Justice Holly Kirby and Department of Human Services Commissioner Dr. Raquel Hatter.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) will host its Annual Celebrate Pro Bono event next Tuesday at the Square Room in Knoxville’s Market Square. The group will celebrate local attorneys who have donated time and legal services during the past year and present awards for Law Student of the Year, Pro Bono Advocate, Pro Bono Partner and Law Firm of the Year. The group also will induct Knoxville lawyer Bernard E. Bernstein into the Donald F. Paine Memorial Pro Bono Hall of Fame. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased online.

Jimmy Carter, 39th President, Nobel Peace Prize winner and international humanitarian, will be in Nashville July 23 to sign copies of his book “A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety.” The event will be held at the Nashville Public Library at 4:30 p.m. To join the signing line, you must purchase a copy of the book from Parnassus Books, either in-store or at the event. NALS will host its third annual After Hours Silent Auction Thursday at 5:30 p.m. All proceeds benefit Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, the state’s largest non-profit law firm. The Hamilton County courts will hold a forum on its new Mental Health Court tomorrow from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Parkridge Diagnostic Center, 2205 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404. The mental health court will launch later this month with the goal of providing services and breaking down barriers for defendants with serious mental illness, Chattanooga Times Free Press reports.
