Humphrey on the Hill reports a schedule of nine public meetings on Tennessee’s roads and transportation needs was released by Senate Transportation and Safety Commitment Chairman Jim Tracy, R-Shelbyville. “These hearings are to discuss solutions to fund the long-term needs of Tennessee’s transportation system,” Tracy said. “Our needs are multi-faceted and there are several options which have been offered.”

The Memphis Bar Association (MBA) is accepting nominations for its two highest honors to be presented at the MBA Annual Meeting, Dec. 3. The Sam A. Myar Jr. Memorial Award is presented annually to a young lawyer who has rendered outstanding personal service to the legal profession and the community. The Jerome Turner Lawyer’s Lawyer Award is given annually to a lawyer who has been practicing for more than 15 years and has exemplified the aspirations embodied in the Guidelines for Professional Courtesy and Conduct.

The Knoxville Bar Association Functions Committee is recruiting musical acts for an open mic night Sept. 24, 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. The event will showcase the talents of local attorneys and law students. The University of Tennessee College of Law will host an admissions workshop Sept. 9, 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., for potential law school applicants in East Tennessee. The free event will include a Q&A with admission officers and a recruitment fair. Preregistration is not required.

Entries are due Oct.1 for the 2016 Seigenthaler-Sutherland Cup National First Amendment Moot Court Competition, which will be held March 18-19. The competition for law students is sponsored by the Newseum’s First Amendment Center and the Columbus School of Law. First-day rounds will be at the Columbus School of Law and second-day final rounds at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

The Knoxville Bar Association will honor the Justices of the Tennessee Supreme Court and other local judiciary at the upcoming annual Supreme Court Dinner. Guest speaker Lieutenant Joe Kenda will share his experiences from more than two decades of homicide investigations with the Colorado Springs Police Department. The dinner is planned for Sept. 9 at the Knoxville Convention Center Ballroom. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online.
