Jonathan Rapping, a criminal defense attorney and the founder and president of Gideon’s Promise, will deliver the 2016 Charles H. Miller Lecture in Professional Responsibility at the University of Tennessee College of Law March 1. Gideon’s Promise is devoted to training and supporting public defenders across the southeastern United States and was featured in the award-winning HBO documentary "Gideon’s Army." The lecture, “Changing the American Criminal Justice Narrative” will be at noon in Room 132 of the College of Law, 1505 W. Cumberland Ave, Knoxville.

The Lawyers' Association for Women - Marion Griffin Chapter extended the deadline for nominations for the Judge Martha Craig Daugherty Award and the LAW Rising Star Award through Feb. 19. The awards will be presented April 20. Nomination forms are available online.

The American Bar Association is accepting nominations for its 2016 Top 40 Young Lawyers awards through March 1. Nominees should exemplify a broad range of high achievement, innovation, leadership, and legal and community service. As of Aug. 30, nominees must be under 36 years old. Nominators do not have to be ABA members.

The TBA Access to Justice Committee, in partnership with the TBA Corporate Counsel Section and the Association of Corporate Counsel, is hosting the 10th annual Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Gala on March 5 in Nashville. The gala, which will be held at the Pinnacle at Symphony Place, will feature remarks from Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Lee. The CCPBI awards will be presented for outstanding law firm and legal department. The deadline to become an event sponsor or purchase tickets is Friday. Attorney volunteers are needed for a legal clinic planned for tomorrow night at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 600 28th Ave. N., in Nashville. The University of Memphis Health Law Institute will host its third annual Symposium, titled “An ACE in the Hand of Policy Reform; Loading the Deck for a Trauma-informed Juvenile Justice System,” on Feb. 9. Mark Soler, the executive director at the Center for Children’s Law and Policy in Washington, D.C., will be the keynote speaker. The event will be held from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Cecil C. Students at the University of Tennessee College of Law will offer free tax preparation help through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The VITA program, which runs through April 14, offers free tax help and electronic filing to persons with disabilities, limited English-speaking taxpayers and more. Assistance is available from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursday in Suite 157 of the College of Law. Call 865-974-2492 for more information.

Attorney David Coates, of the Law Offices of David Coates, has partnered with Habitat for Humanity and Legal Aid of East Tennessee to offer free estate planning this Saturday to every Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area homeowner in the Chattanooga area. “Now that these families are homeowners, it is such a blessing to see them able to meet with a lawyer to help protect their homes,” Cheryl Marsh, Director of Family Services, said. The clinic, along with a free legal clinic, will be held in the Chattanooga Housing Authority’s multipurpose room located at 801 N. Holtzclaw Ave.
