Former TBA President Jim Emison will speak on his upcoming book, “Elbert Williams First to Die,” tomorrow to Leo Bearman Inns of Court at the University Club of Memphis, 1346 Central Ave. The book focuses on the unsolved 1940 murder of Williams, a NAACP member, in Brownsville. The National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges will accept nominations for the 2016 NCBJ Next Generation Program on May 4 from noon – 5 p.m. (EST). Qualifications for candidates include five to 10 years of experience practicing law and devotion of at least 50 percent of their practice to bankruptcy cases. The Fleming-Morrow Distinguished Lecture in African American History will begin March 10 at the University of Tennessee College of Law.The inaugural series will feature the life of Constance Baker Motley, the first black woman appointed to the federal bench. Tomiko Brown-Nagin, the Daniel P.S. Paul Professor of Constitutional Law and professor of history at Harvard University, will deliver the address from 5:30-7 p.m. in Room 132.

The T.J. Martell Foundation Nashville Honors Gala, hosted by Charles Esten, will be held Feb. 29 at the Omni Nashville Hotel, 250 5th Ave S. The Tennessee Faith and Justice Alliance (TFJA) will host training March 14 to prepare volunteer attorneys to assist low income Tennesseans in community specific high need areas of law. The training will focus on wills, expungements, landlord/tenant law, family law and civil general session issues. The training, scheduled from 10 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. Central Time at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, will offer five hours of CLE. Lunch will be provided. Online registration is $25.

Specifically, judges are needed to preside over trial rounds, as well as law students or legal staff to serve as bailiffs. A volunteer form is available online. Jonathan Rapping, a criminal defense attorney and the founder and president of Gideon’s Promise, will deliver the 2016 Charles H. Miller Lecture in Professional Responsibility at the University of Tennessee College of Law March 1. Gideon’s Promise is devoted to training and supporting public defenders across the southeastern United States and was featured in the award-winning HBO documentary "Gideon’s Army." The lecture, “Changing the American Criminal Justice Narrative” will be at noon in Room 132 of the College of Law, 1505 W. Cumberland Ave, Knoxville.
