Volunteer lawyers are needed for an upcoming Women’s Empowerment Conference organized by Women Overcoming Many Battles Ministries, a faith-based nonprofit that seeks to help women overcome life’s challenges. The conference will take place this coming Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Nashville. Attorneys are needed to lead 15-minute presentations on child support enforcement and wrongful eviction and participate in a general question and answer session. Lawyers also are needed to provide brief legal advice in one-on-one meetings with the women. Those interested in helping should contact AOC Pro Bono Coordinator Patricia Mills, 615-741-2687.

We're cleaning house at the Tennessee Bar Center, and there may be something we don't want that is perfect for you. Visit the Tennessee Bar Center Lobby (221 Fourth Ave. North in Nashville) any day next week and help yourself to the treasures we found while cleaning out our basement and storerooms. It's mostly furniture and office supplies or equipment. The Bar Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Legal organizations in Knoxville have teamed up to hold a monthly legal advice clinic for veterans, service members and military families. The inaugural two-hour clinic will be held Sept. 7 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. The clinic then will be held each month on the Wednesday preceding the Pro Bono Project’s Saturday Bar. Partners include the Knoxville Bar Association and its Barristers’ Access to Justice Committee, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, the Knox County Public Defender’s Office, University of Tennessee College of Law and the local Veterans’ Affairs office. The Tennessee Supreme Court’s Indigent Representation Task Force was scheduled to wrap up its listening tour in Nashville next week but has added an additional session in Franklin on Aug. 11. While speaking slots for the Nashville session are full, area lawyers are invited to attend the Williamson County hearing, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Williamson County Administrative Complex, 1320 West Main St., Franklin, TN 37064. The Nashville Bar Foundation will hold an event Aug. 27 at 5 p.m. to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Justice A. A. Birch Building and dedicate a new 8-foot bronze statue of Birch, who was the first African American to serve as chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court. The Knoxville Bar Association's annual dinner honoring the justices of the Tennessee Supreme Court will take place Sept. 7 at the Knoxville Convention Center Ballroom, with a reception at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person, and tables of 10 may be reserved in advance. G. Douglas Jones with Jones & Hawley Law will give the keynote address. As a U.S. attorney, Jones lead a team that re-opened the historic “cold case” of the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham and achieved the conviction of two former KKK members for the murder of four young girls. Learn more or buy tickets here.

Lawyers interested in learning more about the work of the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Indigent Representation Task Force, which has been conducting listening tours across the state, are invited to join a conference call with TBA Public Policy Coordinator Brenda Gadd this Friday at noon Central Daylight Time. A week later, on July 29, the task force will be at the Nashville School of Law, 4013 Armory Oaks Dr., Nashville 37204 for its final forum. A week after a series of national shootings involving police exposed deep-seeded racial mistrust around the country, Nashville Mayor Megan Barry announced several public events to hear from area residents on policing, criminal justice and race relations. The forums, to be held in conjunction with Lipscomb University’s Institute of Conflict Management, kick off July 23 at 1 p.m. at Pearl-Cohn High School, the Tennessean reports.

The University of Memphis School of Law will host the National Juvenile Justice Network conference July 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Juvenile justice advocates from across the country will be attending and organizers have invited law school students, faculty and staff to attend free of charge.
