The Fairfield Glade Neighborhood Watch will host a criminal justice presentation and community discussion from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 15 at the Fairfield Glade Community and Conference Center. Criminal justice professionals will be on hand to talk about the current status of the county’s criminal justice system and highlight any issues or concerns for the future. Those invited to participate include Circuit Court Judge Jonathan Lee Young, Criminal Court Judges Gary S. McKenzie and David Patterson, District Attorney Brian C. The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee will hold a retirement reception for Magistrate Judges John S. Bryant and E. Clifton Knowles on Sept. 8 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The ceremonies will take place in Judge Aleta Trauger’s courtroom on the eighth floor of the federal building and courthouse in Nashville.

The Nashville Chapter of the American Constitution Society presents its Annual Supreme Court Preview on Sept. 13 at noon. The free event will feature remarks by Pamela Karlan, law professor and co-director of the Supreme Court Litigation Clinic at Stanford Law School, and a former deputy assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. The Knoxville Bar Association’s inaugural Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic will take place Sept. 7 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37912. The clinic is a joint project of the Knoxville Barristers and their Access to Justice Committee, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Knox County Public Defender’s Office, the University of Tennessee College of Law and the local VA office. Lawyers are needed to volunteer to help veterans with a wide variety of issues, including family, landlord/tenant, bankruptcy, criminal defense, consumer protection, contract disputes, child support and personal injury cases. The Sixth Annual Seersucker Flash Mob in Memphis will take place Wednesday at noon in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel. This tradition regularly draws members of the local bar and judiciary and provides an opportunity to show off your seersucker one last time before summer’s end. The Tennessee Supreme Court Historical Society, in cooperation with the Knoxville Bar Association, will hold its annual cocktail reception and “Night with the Chiefs” on Oct. 13. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a program following at 6:30 p.m. The event, held each year to honor the members of state Supreme Court, will be held at the East Tennessee Historical Center in Knoxville. An investiture ceremony for William E. “Bill” Young as a new Davidson County chancellor will take place tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Chancery Part II courtroom of the Historic Davidson County Courthouse, the Nashville Bar Association reports. Young was appointed to the court on Aug. 5 in anticipation of the retirement of Chancellor Carol McCoy on Sept. 1. Young has been serving as an associate attorney general in the office of the Tennessee Attorney General. He previously was administrative director for the AOC; solicitor general; general counsel for BlueCross BlueShield, Vanderbilt University and HCA; president of the Hospital Alliance of Tennessee; deputy commissioner of TennCare; and senior counsel in tax division of the attorney general’s office.

A monument honoring women's suffrage and the suffragists of Tennessee will be unveiled at Nashville's Centennial Park this Friday. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Speakers will include Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillian, Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, among others. The date was chosen to coincide with Women's Equality Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the 19th Amendment into law. Newly elected Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Jeff Bivins will take the oath of office during the upcoming Equal Justice University in Murfreesboro. Justice Connie Clark will present the oath to Bivins at the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services' Leadership Luncheon, set for noon on Sept. 1. TBA President Jason Long is the featured speaker and Duncan School of Law is the sponsor of the Leadership Lunch. Those not attending the conference but who would like to attend the lunch should register online by Wednesday.
