A 1958 civil rights case is coming to the big screen tomorrow with the release of “Loving.” The film follows the story of Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving, an interracial couple, who were married in Washington, D.C., but soon moved back to their home in Virginia. A pregnant Mrs. Loving and her husband were yanked out of bed by police enforcing Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act, which prohibited interracial marriage. They were arrested and ordered by a judge to dissolve their union or leave the state for 25 years. For nearly a decade, the Lovings fought the law, ultimately prevailing when the U.S. Supreme Court struck it down in 1967. The New York Times reviews the film.

The Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) will hold its 37th Annual Banquet on Jan. 31 at the Tower Center at Clark Tower in Memphis. The event will posthumously honor Mary Wolff, formerly with Wolff Ardis, as the 2016 recipient of the Marion Griffin-Frances Loring Award for outstanding achievement in the legal profession. New board members and chairs will be inducted and scholarships will be awarded to local law students. Tickets are $60 for AWA members, $70 for nonmembers and $30 for law students. The Nashville Bar Association (NBA) will hold its Annual Meeting & Banquet at the Music City Center on Dec. 8. Among other activities, the NBA will present its 2016 John C. Tune Public Service Award at the event. The group recently announced that this year’s award will go to Nashville lawyers Bill Harbison and Abby Rubenfeld. Harbison, immediate past president of the TBA, and Rubenfeld, immediate past chair of the TBA’s LGBT Section, were instrumental in advancing the case used by the U.S. Supreme Court to affirm marriage equality.

A Faith & Justice Legal Advice Clinic will be held Dec. 3 at First Apostolic Church, 5020 Pleasant Ridge Rd. in Knoxville, in conjunction with Legal Aid of East Tennessee’s regular Saturday Bar Clinic. As part of the initiative, the Saturday Bar will move to First Apostolic Church that day. The goal of the Faith & Justice Clinic is to provide community-based locations that are not as intimidating as law firms or other corporate settings for people who need the services of an attorney. The Music City Community Court Expungement Clinic and Indigency Docket has seen a tremendous community response in Nashville as hundreds of people have obtained non-conviction expungements and important information regarding conviction expungements. The Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence and the State Department of Health are joining forces to host a Bystander Intervention Summit Nov. 29 and 30 at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro. The event will feature national speakers leading discussions centered on issues related to bystander intervention, which is defined as the psychological phenomenon in which someone is more likely to intervene in an emergency situation when alone than when others are present. Participants will leave with a toolkit to enhance bystander intervention messaging in their own communities. Register online.

The Nashville Public Library is hosting civil rights icon and Georgia congressman John Lewis for a public lecture and book signing Nov. 19. The free event is open to the public and will take place at Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet School, 613 17th Ave. N. Lewis has been named the 2016 Nashville Public Library Literary Award Honoree. His three-part book “March” is a vivid firsthand account of his lifelong struggle for civil rights and human rights. The first book in the trilogy will be the 2017 Nashville Reads selection. Volunteers are needed to help with the event. Sign up here to help out.

The Nashville Bar Association will hold its fall memorial service next Thursday at the Downtown Presbyterian Church. The service will begin at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following in the fellowship hall. Among those being honored are John Jay Hooker Jr., Mary Frances Lyle, Joel Moseley Sr., Gerry Neenan, Dale Quillen, Elizabeth Smith and Robert Warner Jr. Memorial resolutions recounting the lives and legal careers of the deceased will be read at the service by friends and colleagues of the bench and bar.
