The Tennessee Justice Center (TJC) will celebrate 21 years of legal service as well as a new office space next month, and attorneys are invited to attend and join the festivities. TJC will host an Open House and Happy Hour on Feb. 13, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the new office, located at 211 7th Ave. N., Suite 100, in downtown Nashville. RSVP to dwhaley@tnjustice.org.

The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS) will host its annual Equal Justice University on Aug. 30 – Sept. 1, at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro. TALS is currently requesting that former attendees of the conference share their photos from previous years, in honor of the conference’s 40th anniversary. The Tennessee Bar Association will be closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday, which marks Dr. King’s birthday. The TBA will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 8 a.m. All state offices and state courts also will be closed.

The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) will host Lawyerpalooza II from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on April 27 at Scruffy City Hall. The event will build on the first Lawyerpalooza, which was held in 2015. The music festival is designed to showcase the talents of lawyers and judges — and new acts are needed. Lawyers in Knoxville are making plans to form a local chapter of the American Constitution Society (ACS) and invite any interested attorney to attend a planning meeting on Jan. 27. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. at Cafe 4 in Market Square. Two of Vanderbilt University’s graduate schools – the Owen Graduate School of Management and Vanderbilt Law School – are joining forces to offer a two-day program on Feb. 7 and 8 to help lawyers run more efficient businesses and achieve more ambitious goals. The university reports that faculty from both schools are working to create innovative new curriculum for the Legal Project Management course, which seeks to meet a need in the legal industry for “efficient, effective project management based on successful methods long established in other industries.”

A free legal clinic for veterans will be held Tuesday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Memphis Veterans Center, 1407 Union Ave., 11th floor. Volunteers are still needed, especially in the practice areas of criminal defense, family law and employment law. The clinic is co-sponsored by the Memphis Bar Association and Memphis Area Legal Services and takes place the second Tuesday of the month to assist veterans with legal advice. The Sumner County Bar Association and the Sumner County Chancery Court invite attorneys to attend the unveiling of the official portrait of retired chancellor Tom E. Gray. The ceremony will take place Jan. 13 at noon in the second floor courtroom of the Sumner County Courthouse. A reception will follow the unveiling.

The TBA will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2, in observance of New Year’s Day. The office will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 8 a.m. All state government offices will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. This includes the Administrative Office of the Courts as well as the appellate court clerk offices in Jackson, Knoxville and Nashville.

Author, scholar and civil rights activist Angela Davis will be the keynote speaker at a banquet Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. in Memphis. Davis, 72, is a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has lectured across the country and is the author of nine books including, “Women, Race, and Class,” “Are Prisons Obsolete?” and “The Meaning of Freedom.” The event is sponsored by Just City, Rhodes College and the Women’s Foundation of Greater Memphis.
