Two upcoming expungement clinics in West Tennessee are in need of attorney volunteers. The first is in Jackson on April 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Criminal Justice Complex, 515 South Liberty Street. Contact Kathryn Tucker at (731) 426-1308 for more information. The second is in Bolivar on April 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Campbell Chapel Baptist Church, 17545 Highway 125 South. Contact Zulfat Zuara at (731) 609-5092 to volunteer.

The Rutherford County Community Court is looking for volunteers for an expungement clinic this Saturday. Held in partnership with the TBA Young Lawyers Division and other groups, it will take place at the First Baptist Church, located at 738 East Castle Street in Murfreesboro, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attorneys who wish to help should contact I’Ashea Myles-Dihigo.

A free legal advice clinic will be held in Shelbyville on Saturday as a part of the Tennessee Supreme Court’s #Help4TNDay, and volunteers attorneys are needed. The clinic will be held at Scott’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 940 Morton Street, from 9 a.m. to noon. Those who can help or have questions should contact Randy Spivey with the Lipscomb University Institute for Law, Justice and Society.

The Arts and Business Council will host a benefit on May 24 in Nashville, with proceeds going to the Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts program. The evening will showcase music, dance, film and more from local artists, as well as a silent auction featuring items like co-writing sessions with Nashville songwriters. The event will take place at W.O. Smith Music School, 1125 8th Ave. South, from 6 – 9 p.m.

Vanderbilt Law will host the Blockchain and the Law Conference, where participants will explore what impact blockchain is having on the law and legal professionals. Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology most often associated with bitcoin and other digital currency. The Tennessee Supreme Court will host a free pro bono-themed CLE in Nashville in conjunction with #Help4TNDay. This event will provide attorneys with information on points of entry into doing pro bono in the Nashville area. Justice Connie Clark will summarize the ethical rules surrounding pro bono work and highlight the Tennessee Faith & Justice Alliance, an initiative of the Tennessee Access to Justice Commission. Representatives from the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands and the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services will cover the opportunities their organizations provide for lawyers to do pro bono work. The event will be held at Nashville School of Law on April 1 from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Register at the Help4TN website.

Vanderbilt Law School will play host to the inaugural Music City Legal Hackathon and Unconference on April 7-8, produced by Music City Legal Hackers. The event will bring together members of the legal community with coders, developers, programmers and more to “hack” solutions to challenges faced by Tennessee’s nonprofit legal assistance providers. The Tennessee Supreme Court will kick off #Help4TNDay on March 21 with five press conferences in five cities across the state. #Help4TNDay, planned for April 1, aims to educate the public about free legal advice events as part of its Access to Justice Initiative, in which Tennesseans are invited to get free civil legal help online or in person at walk-in clinics near them. There will also be educational events across the state where people can learn about their legal rights and how to resolve disputes without going to court. West Tennessee Legal Services and the TBA YLD will be hosting a free expungement clinic in Jackson on Friday, April 7. The clinic will be held as an event for the Help4TN project. The clinic will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Criminal Justice Complex, 3rd Floor Conference Room. Those who are able to volunteer should contact Amber Floyd or Kathryn Tucker.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee and the Sevier County Bar Association will host a free legal clinic for the survivors of the Gatlinburg wildfires on March 27. Clients are expected to need advice with consumer/debt issues, insurance, tax problems, government benefits and more.
