Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Roger A. Page will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon in Lewisburg on May 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Joining him will be Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Robert L. Holloway Jr. and Court of Appeals Judge Richard H. Dinkins, as well as moderators Chancellor J.B. Cox and Judge J. Russell Parkes. A free program in Chattanooga will train pro bono attorneys to represent TennCare enrollees in enrollment and medical service appeals and contested case hearings. The program, called “Making a Difference for Families in Need,” will be led by Chris Coleman, a staff attorney with the Tennessee Justice Center. Next week, the Knoxville Bar Association will gather for a celebration of the lives and careers of attorneys who passed away since last August. Rev. Charles Fels and Justice Sharon Lee will be guests at the event, which will be held on Friday, May 12 at 3 p.m. in the Tennessee Supreme Court Courtroom, 505 W Main Street in Knoxville.

In recognition of Law Day on May 1, the American Bar Association will sponsor programming in Washington, D.C., and encourage celebrations across the country that highlight the rule of law. “The 14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy” is the theme this year, and will be the subject of three public events in the nation’s capital: "The 15th Annual Leon Jaworski Public Program" and "A Law Day conversation with the D.C. Courts" on May 1, and the “Dialogue on the 14th Amendment” program for high school students on May 2.

To celebrate its new Knoxville location, Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) will host a event in which local judges will serve the food and drinks called “Serving Justice.” The evening will include a short program and feature Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero, Lincoln Memorial University President Dr. B. James Dawson, LMU Duncan School of Law Dean Justice Gary R. Wade and LAET executives. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 2 at the Star Building, 607 West Summit Hill Drive.

Volunteers are still needed for the Lipscomb/St. James Legal Advice Clinic on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The clinic will be at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 600 28th Ave. North in Nashville. The clinic will be advice-only with no expectation that volunteers take on continuing representation. The Tennessee Coalition for Sensible Justice will hold a reception and discussion in Nashville on April 11 featuring Kentucky Secretary of Justice and Public Safety John Tilley and Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box. The topic will be smart-on-crime justice reform in Tennessee. The event will take place at the Hermitage Hotel, 231 6th Ave. North, from 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Saturday is #Help4TNDay and Tennesseans will have the opportunity to receive free legal advice and learn about civil legal resources available throughout the year. Attorneys are still needed to volunteer for events scheduled across the state and online. The program, which kicked off in mid-March and continues through mid-April, is focused on bringing attention to the on-going need for free and low cost civil legal services and highlight the groups that provide these services to Tennesseans in need. Vanderbilt Law School will host the inaugural Music City Legal Hackathon and Unconference on April 7-8, as well as the Blockchain and the Law Conference on April 7. The Hackathon will bring together members of the legal community with coders, developers, programmers and more to “hack” solutions to challenges faced by Tennessee’s nonprofit legal assistance providers. At the Blockchain event, participants will explore what impact blockchain is having on the law and legal professionals. Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology most often associated with bitcoin and other digital currency.

At the TBA Convention in Kingsport, a special joint Bench/Bar CLE will examine the role neuroscience plays in our decision-making skills and judgment. The session will include exercises, tools and specific strategies for increasing impartiality and integrity in decision-making. The course will identify ways to increase fairness guided by science. The convention will be June 14-17 at the MeadowView Marriott Resort.
