The TBA will host a book signing next week for Bill Haltom, author of the just released second edition of The Other Fellow May Be Right: The Civility of Howard Baker. The signing will take place June 15 during the TBA annual convention in Kingsport. The book examines the “strategic civility” of the late U.S. Sen. Howard H. Baker Jr. and also reflects on Tennessee’s current political climate. Nashville attorney Gary Shockley reviewed the book for the Tennessee Bar Journal.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee will host three legal clinics for seniors in Knoxville this month, thanks to the “Serving Seniors” grant and The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The first clinic will be held June 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Frank Strange Senior Center in Lovell Heights, the second will be on the same day from 10 a.m. to noon at the Corryton Senior Center, and the third will be on June 15 at 1 p.m. at the South Knoxville Senior Center. Each session will continue until everyone present has been served, and no appointment is necessary. The grant is being administered by the Community Foundation through the settlement of a lawsuit against SeniorTrust and ElderTrust.

Those vacancies are: Middle Grand Division Governor - Position 1, Middle Grand Division Governor - Position 2, and Governor of the Fifth District - Position 2. Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) will host its annual Pro Bono Night event on June 9 in Chattanooga. The program will be held at 2 on the Roof, 313 Manufacturers Road, starting at 5:30 p.m., and will feature a live band, open bar and silent auction. Tickets are $35 each and are available on the LAET website.

A reception to celebrate Shelby County Judge Robert L. Childers’ retirement will be held on June 21. The event will be at the Shelby County Courthouse, Second Floor, South Corridor, from 3 to 5 p.m. Childers’ portrait unveiling is planned for Jan. 19.

The A Step Ahead Foundation will host a get together during the TBA Annual Convention in Kingsport to spread the word on how the organization is helping prevent unplanned pregnancies in five Tennessee cities – Jackson, Chattanooga, Nashville, Knoxville and Memphis. Former Shelby County Juvenile Court Judicial Magistrate Claudia Haltom will lead the event, which is also being hosted by Jimmie Carpenter Miller, Dr. Leigh Johnson, TBA President Jason Long, Tennessee Lawyers' Association for Women President Ramona DeSalvo, Wellmont Health System’s Terry Eads, Kristi M. Bennett, Jane Van Deren Pera, Lucian Pera, Sarah Sheppeard and Judge Duane Slone. The event will be held in Salon A at the Meadowview Marriott Conference Resort on June 14 from 4 to 5 p.m.

The Crockett County NAACP and the Equal Justice Initiative are sponsoring a ceremony to remember Joe Boxley, a man lynched by a mob in 1929. The ceremony will feature a dedication of soil from the site where he was killed for permanent display in the Equal Justice Initiative museum. Speakers will include District Attorney Garry A. Brown, Tennessee History for Kids Founder Bill Carey, a Boxley family member and a representative of the Equal Justice Initiative.The dedication will be in the Crockett County Courthouse in Alamo at 10 a.m. on June 10.

The TBA’s Public Education Committee is seeking volunteers for the 2017 Lipscomb Law Camp, which will be held on the Lipscomb University campus June 12-16. Each year, Lipscomb University’s Institute for Law, Justice and Society hosts a class of high school students from across the country and educates them in matters of law and government. This year’s theme is “Constitutions and Constitutionalism,” and volunteer attorneys are needed to lead sessions June 12-15. Materials and suggested lesson plans will be provided. Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON), which provides legal services to immigrants, will host a fundraiser in Nashville called “Food from Inside the Travel Ban,” and will feature cuisine from Syria, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Iran and Somalia. The event will be held at Vanderbilt University’s Wyatt Center on June 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are available on the JFON website.
