The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis will bestow the 2017 Freedom Award on three individuals, including one who won a landmark legal case and co-founded the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Commercial Appeal reports that Morris Dees, who won a $7 million judgment in a lynching case that bankrupted one of the largest Ku Klux Klan organizations, will be given the award, alongside South African freedom fighter Hugh Masekela and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s youngest daughter, Bernice A. King. The 26h Annual Freedom Awards ceremony will be held on Oct. 19 at the Orpheum theater.

The Community Legal Center of Memphis will host a fashion-themed fundraiser next month called STRUT! 2017. The Sept. 21 event will feature a fashion show, wine pull, silent auction, giving wall and more. It will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mercedes-Benz of Memphis dealership. A partnership between Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET), Tennessee Faith and Justice Alliance, the Christian Legal Society and the Chattanooga Gospel Justice Initiative will host two upcoming legal aid clinics, with more events coming down the pipeline. The Chattanoogan reports that the first clinic is scheduled for Aug. 28, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the South Soddy Daisy Baptist Church, 11055 Dayton Pike in Soddy Daisy. The second will take place at the Samaritan Center on Lee Highway in Ooltewah on Sept. 12 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Paige Evatt, pro bono director at LAET.

The Music City Community Court Pro Se Indigency Docket and Expungement clinic will again be held in Nashville on Saturday. The clinic will be held at First Baptist South Inglewood Church, 1515 Ann St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to volunteers at no charge. Lipscomb University’s Institute for Law, Justice and Society will host a free legal advice clinic in Nashville on Aug. 15 and volunteer attorneys are needed. Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors will host a fundraiser this fall in Nashville to support their work of providing legal services to immigrants and refugees. The event, called “Tapas for Justice,” will be held at Bass, Berry and Sims, 150 3rd Ave S , from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 2. Tickets are $50 per person and $25 for students. The Tennessee Bar Association will be honoring two Tennessee lawyers with receptions this weekend at the ABA Annual Meeting in New York. On Friday, the TBA and Baker Donelson will honor TBA Executive Director Emeritus Allan Ramsaur, and on Saturday, Memphis attorney and former TBA President Buck Lewis will be honored at a reception hosted jointly by the TBA and the University of Tennessee College of Law, the University of Memphis Cecil C.
