Huntsville Wills for Heroes Clinic

When: Friday, September 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Scott County Justice Center, 535 Scott High Drive, Huntsville, TN 37756

WE NEED YOU to assist us with drafting basic estate planning documents for our first responders, serving as witnesses to the documents, and/or notarizing the documents! Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Some of you may also be notaries. If you are a notary, we would love if you could bring your notary supplies with you as we may need you to serve in dual capacities!

The Tennessee Justice Center will honor nine philanthropists at a Hall of Fame Gala next month. Don Enright, Ruth Ann Leach Harnisch, Ellen Levy and Gregg Horowitz, Bill and Robin King, Nancy MacLean, and Steve and Jeanne Thomas will be recognized, having contributed a collective $850,000 to the work of the TJC. The dinner will be held at the Sheraton Grand in Nashville on Oct. 26 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available here.

The Association for Legal Professionals, Nashville Chapter (NALS) will host its 5th Annual NALS After Hours Silent Auction on a new date — Oct. 16. The event, which is free and open to the public, will still take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis LLP. All of the proceeds generated at the auction will be donated to the Tennessee Justice Center. The Peabody Hotel in Memphis will play host to the 7th annual Seersucker Flash Mob on Friday at noon. The event will serve as a fundraiser for Memphis Area Legal Services and A Step Ahead Foundation. Participants who don’t want to miss the “fashion event of the summer” should wear their best puckered suit, dress or casual wear in the lobby of the hotel.

Examples of topics include collateral estoppel, which was featured in The Runaway Jury, or Fifth Amendment issues similar to those of The Client. The TBA’s Young Lawyers Division and the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition are partnering for a power of attorney clinic in Memphis tomorrow and still need volunteers. The clinic will offer assistance with family preparation plans in the event of a deportation or other enforcement action. The clinic will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at El Mercadito, 3766 Ridgeway Road. Those who would like to volunteer can sign up here.

The National Legal Mentoring Consortium will host a national conference in Columbia, South Carolina, April 12 - 14. The conference will focus on recent changes, trends and culture of the legal profession affecting mentoring programs. Keynote speakers include David B. Watkins of Harvard Law School and William C. Hubbard, past American Bar Association president.

LAVPA, the patent pro bono program of the Tennessee Bar Association, is joining forces with the Knoxville Business Support Network to present an Inventor Legal & Business Bootcamp for students, makers, inventors, artisans, small businesses and the attorneys who represent them. The program will feature attorneys, business representatives, professors, community business leaders and the director of the regional office of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The program will be held in Knoxville on Sept. 20, as part of Innov865 Start Up Week. The program will focus on the invention process, business organizations, business plans and investing, including crowdfunding. It is open to the public and free to attend. You may register through Eventbrite. Attorneys who want to receive CLE credit may register and pay for CLE through the TBA

Tomorrow is the last day to register for the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services’ annual Equal Justice University. Guest speakers this year include new TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson and TBA President Lucian Pera. Also scheduled to speak are Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Jeffrey Bivins and Nicole Austin-Hillery, director of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Washington, D.C. office. This year’s EJU will take place in Murfreesboro on Aug. 30 through Sept. 1.
