A fundraiser will be held on Nov. 9 in Nashville to support of the Davidson County Veterans Treatment Court Foundation. The second annual “Honoring Heroes” event will take place at the Freeman Webb rooftop pavilion, 3810 Bedford Ave., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It will include a silent auction and hors d-oeuvres. Tickets are $75 per person, with several sponsorship packages available.

The U.S. Department of Justice, the Anti-Defamation League, the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights will host the West Tennessee Hate Crimes Summit on Oct. 23 at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. The keynote address will come from Judy and Dennis Shepard, parents of Matthew Shepard, and the event will include a review of Tennessee’s Hate Crime Statute. The programming will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please RSVP by Oct. 15 or signup online.

The TBA's Construction Law Section will to offer a free one-hour seminar on what contractors need to know about mechanics’ and materialman’s liens on Oct. 12 at 8 a.m. The purpose of this seminar is to provide information to contractors and subcontractors in Tennessee about their lien rights on projects and the related timing considerations and requirements for perfecting and enforcing a lien in the event of nonpayment. The TBA Young Lawyers Division Law School Outreach and Membership Committees are hosting statewide campus mock interviews and are seeking volunteers. Mock interviews will be held in Knoxville on Oct. 24 at the Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, and in Nashville on Oct. 26 at Vanderbilt University Law School. The interviews will be one-on-one with students who register and will last 30 minutes. Volunteers should sign up for at least a two-hour shift. Those interested in assisting should contact Cole Rogers with contact information and desired time slot.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee will host a Free Legal Advice Clinic on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law office, 1101 Liberty Street. The clinic is co-sponsored by Centro Hispano, so a Spanish-language translator will be provided to aid those who have limited English language proficiency. Appointments are not necessary, as legal help will be available on a first come, first served basis.

There's still time to purchase tickets for Legal Aid of East Tennessee's garden party fundraiser on Sept. 28 in Maryville. The event is called “Fall in the Garden,” and will be held at Out of Eden Garden Center, 2928 Highway 411 S, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available at LAET’s website.

The University of Tennessee College of Law Legal Clinic will soon be celebrating 70 years of serving indigent clients and helping students develop valuable skills in the profession. Multiple events have been scheduled to mark the occasion. A lecture will be held on Oct. 30 at 12 p.m. at the College of Law Building, Room 132, with special guest speaker Vanita Gupta, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. A more formal celebration will be held on the evening of Nov. 17 at The Emporium in Knoxville, featuring past directors, faculty, and more.

The Tennessee Secretary of State’s office has begun its second annual civics essay contest "to encourage students to be actively engaged citizens by recognizing their important roles as citizens." Student winners will receive a TNStars 529 Program College Savings scholarship of $100, $250 or $500 in addition to a trip to the State Capitol. The deadline to enter is Nov. 10.

The Student Bar Association and Public Action Law Society of the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, in conjunction with the Memphis Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will host a Fundraiser Tailgate benefiting the Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) Campaign for Equal Justice Sept. 23. The annual campaign helps provide MALS with funds to augment its provision of critical legal services Memphians who would otherwise go unrepresented in life-altering legal matters, On Legal Grounds reports. The tailgate starts at 11 a.m. at Tiger Lane. Admission is $15.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division is seeking attorneys to volunteer at a Wills for Heroes legal clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Scott County Justice Center in Huntsville on Sept. 22. The clinic will provide free wills, powers of attorney and advance directives for Tennessee’s firefighters, law enforcement officers and other emergency responders.
