The TBA Access to Justice Committee, in partnership with the TBA Corporate Counsel Section and the Association of Corporate Counsel, is hosting the 12th annual Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Gala on March 3 in Nashville. The gala, which will be held at the Pinnacle at Symphony Place, will feature remarks from Eve Runyon, president and CEO of the Pro Bono Institute, and the CCPBI awards presentation. Attorneys from Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport will be honored as outstanding legal department for their work with Legal Aid of East Tennessee and Bass, Berry & Sims will receive the law firm award for its ongoing work supporting the Tennessee Justice Center. Know a lawyer on the rise? The American Bar Association honors the Top 40 Young Lawyers every year with its Annual On the Rise list. Winners exemplify high achievement, innovation, vision, leadership and legal and community service. To be eligible, the attorney must be a member of the ABA and younger than 36 on Aug. 30. Individuals cannot nominate themselves. The deadline to submit nominations is March 1.

The TBA's Young Lawyers Division is seeking volunteers for a Wills for Heroes Clinic scheduled for March 10 in Dyersburg. The clinic, which aims to provide wills and other end-of-life documents to first responders, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McIver’s Grant Public Library, 410 W. Volunteers are needed for an expungement clinic in Memphis Saturday at St. Andrew AME Community Life Center and Gymnasium, 1472 Mississippi Blvd. Those interested should let Amber Floyd or Brittany Williams know their availability. Training will be provided at 9 a.m., while the clinic starts at 10 a.m. The clinic is sponsored by the TBA's Young Lawyers Division, the Memphis Bar Association, the Ben F. Jones Chapter of the National Bar Association, the Tennessee Faith & Justice Alliance and the Shelby County General Sessions Clerk’s Office.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Ben F. Jones Chapter of the National Bar Association is hosting a day of programming at the Fogelman Business Center in Memphis. The event, starting at 9 a.m. on Feb. 23, will focus on the protest movement in its current state as well as provide updated information on the law surrounding assembly, protest and municipal responsibility. Speakers include local historical figures who worked with Dr. King, representatives of the media, City of Memphis, local activists, attorneys and judges. The Fred D. Gray Institute for Law, Justice & Society will host another legal advice clinic on Feb. 20 at the St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 600 28th Avenue North in Nashville. Three judges from the Tennessee Court of Appeals will hear arguments on the campus of the University of Tennessee School of Law on Feb. 20, giving students and the public a chance to see appellate cases in action. Judges John Westley McClarty, Thomas R. Frierson and W. Neal McBrayer will hear four cases as well as speak to the audience and answer questions. Opinions deciding the cases will be issued by the court at a later date. “When law students have the opportunity to see the legal system up close in action, it is always a tremendous benefit for their preparation as lawyers,” said professor Penny White, who oversees the event.

Applications are due by Feb. 23 for Knoxville Bar Foundation grants, which were established to enhance the public's understanding of and confidence in the legal system, and to serve the legal profession. Last year, nine grants totaling $24,900 were approved.

The Davidson County Veterans Court will host graduation ceremonies on Monday at 1 p.m. in the Justice A.A. Birch Building, 408 2nd Avenue North. Deborah Taylor Tate, director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, and Many-Bears Grinder, the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Veterans Services, will join Veterans Court Judge Melissa Blackburn in honoring the nine new graduates.
