A graduation will be held for participants in the Davidson County Veterans Court on Monday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. at the Justice A. A. Birch Courthouse’s courtroom 3-B in Nashville. Remarks will be given by Robert D. Tuke, U.S. Marine Corps. Veteran and Davidson County Veterans Court Foundation President. A reception will follow the ceremony. The TBA's annual Public Service Luncheon will be held this Saturday at the downtown Nashville DoubleTree Hotel. The luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. and will end before 2 p.m. This year's honorees are Daniel Horwitz, who receives the Harris Gilbert Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year Award, Mary Michelle Gillum, who was named the Ashley Wiltshire Public Service Attorney of the Year, and Alexa Spata, the Law Student Volunteer of the Year. A special award, the Access to Justice Champion Award, will be presented to TBA Executive Director Emeritus Allan Ramsaur, in acknowledgement of his accomplishments as a bar leader and as a leader in the access to justice community. The luncheon was originally scheduled for January, but was rescheduled due to bad weather.

The Knoxville Bar Association will observe Law Day with a celebration and program on May 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Knoxville Hilton Downtown. The theme is “Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom” and will feature speakers including Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery III, U.S. Attorney Doug Overbey and moderator U.S. Magistrate Judge Debra Poplin.

The Nashville Bar Association will host its annual Law Day Luncheon at noon on May 4 at the Downtown Renaissance Hotel. This is the 60th year the event has been held, and the topic for 2018 will be “Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom.” Former Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell will be the featured speaker, with Judge Frank Clement serving as master of ceremonies. Tickets are available on the NBA website.

The YWCA will again host its “Stand Against Racism” community advocacy fair on April 27 in Nashville. The fair begins at 11:30 a.m., with an official program starting at noon. Scheduled speakers include Gloria McKissack, retired Tennessee State University professor and former activist in the Civil Rights Movement, and DarKenya Waller, executive director of the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee.

The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will host a symposium and luncheon on Monday as part of a week-long event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will serve as keynote speaker at the luncheon. Topics will cover the state of civil and human rights issues, as well as racial and economic equity 50 years after MLK’s death. The symposium will be held at the Peabody Hotel.

The Tennessee Justice Center has announced a new event honoring mothers and fathers who advocate on behalf of the rights of children, especially those with special needs. The TJC will host its first annual Mother’s Day Luncheon on May 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville. Single tickets are $125 and tables are $1,000.
