NALS Annual Silent Auction Fundraiser Set for Next Week

The Association for Legal Professionals, Nashville Chapter (NALS) will host its 6th Annual NALS After Hours Silent Auction on Aug. 16. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis LLP. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Tennessee Justice Center. Those who would like to donate an item for the auction or volunteer at the event should contact Dranda Whaley at 615-255-0332 or dwhaley@tnjustice.org.

Volunteers Needed for Expungement Clinic in Nashville

The TBA Young Lawyers Division is seeking volunteers for an expungement clinic Aug. 18 in Nashville. The clinic will be held at New Covenant Christian Church, 2201 Osage Street. Sign-in for the pre-registered participants begins at 9 a.m. and the clinic will start at 10:15 a.m., running until noon. All volunteer attorneys are asked to arrive at 9:30 a.m. for orientation and the run of the day. The Criminal Court Clerk’s office will have computers and the ability to process the expungement paperwork right on the spot. Those available to help should contact Amber Floyd.

LMU Duncan to Host Talk on Unsolved Murder of a Civil Rights Activist

The LMU Duncan School of Law will host a free talk from attorney Jim Emison on Elbert Williams, an NAACP official who was murdered for his civil rights work and whose death remains unsolved. The upcoming Tennessee Elder Justice Conference will focus on a multi-disciplinary approaches to combating elder abuse. The event will be held Sept 18-19 in Gatlinburg and is hosted by the East Tennessee Elder Justice Coalition, a project of the East Tennessee Human Resources Agency and the East Tennessee Area Agency on Aging and Disability. 

KBA Supreme Court Dinner Planned for Sept. 5

The Knoxville Bar Association will host its annual Supreme Court Dinner on Sept. 5 at the Crowne Plaza Knoxville. The dinner pays tribute to Tennessee's Supreme Court justices and members of the local judiciary. A cash bar reception will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner starting at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on the KBA website.

Volunteers Needed for Expungement Clinic in Nashville

Volunteers are needed for another Music City Community Courts Expungement Clinic to be held July 21 in Nashville. The clinic will take place at the Goodwill Career Solutions Center, 937 Herman St., with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and the clinic running from 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All volunteer attorneys are asked to arrive at 9:30 a.m. for orientation. Ninety-one participants have pre-registered for this clinic, so more attorney volunteers are needed for any amount of time. The Criminal Court Clerk’s office will have computers and the ability to process the expungement paperwork right on the spot. CLC Memphis to Host ‘Cocktails for a Cause’

The Community Legal Center in Memphis will host “Cocktails for a Cause” on Aug. 3, for which all proceeds will go towards benefiting the CLC. The event will take place at 1509 Peabody Ave. from 5 to 7 p.m. Organizers promise “no speeches, no agenda” for the evening, just a fundraiser for a good cause.

TALS Access to Justice Award Nominations Due Thursday

Time is running out to nominate someone for a 2018 Access to Justice Award. Nominations and any supporting documents must be submitted to TALS by July 5.
