Legal Aid Society has scheduled a Free Legal Help Clinic on Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, 819 33rd Ave. North in Nashville. The clinic will be held in partnership with OneNashville and students from Belmont College of Law. All lawyers are invited to help at this advice-only clinic. The 19th Annual Barristers’ Pancake Breakfast fundraiser, raising money for Komen for the Cure, will be held at the Calvary Church in Memphis on Oct. 5. If admission to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court is one of your career goals, don’t miss the opportunity to make it a reality during the 35th Annual TBA Academy, Nov. 26-27. A select group of Tennessee attorneys will be able to take part in this private ceremony before the court and enjoy other events at the court and the capitol. A reception and celebration dinner kick off the program, which also includes the opportunity to earn three hours of CLE credit. The group will stay at the Hay Adams Hotel, where the TBA has obtained a special rate for participants. The deadline to submit applications is Oct. 22.

The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, Hillcrest United Methodist Church and the Nashville Mayor’s Office of New Americans are seeking attorney volunteers for their “Become a Citizen Now!” workshop, held on Sept. 22 in honor of National Citizenship Day. Local families who are legal permanent residents will receive assistance in applying for naturalization at the event, which will take place from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Interested attorneys should complete this form to take part.

The annual Memphis Law Symposium, held every spring and hosted by the University of Memphis Law Review, will be themed around American voting rights. The symposium, titled “Barriers at the Ballot Box: Protecting or Limiting the Core of the American Identity?”, will begin March 15. It will feature scholars, policymakers and other leaders speaking on structural and procedural barriers to the ballot box, including voter registration list maintenance and voter identification statutes.

The inaugural Tennessee Young Lawyers Conference will be held Oct. 5 - 6 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in the heart of New Orleans’ famous French Quarter. In conjunction with the Conference, which will offer educational programs and up to eight hours of CLE credits, attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with fellow Tennessee lawyers during receptions, dinners and social events offered during the weekend long conference. Vanderbilt astronomy professor David A. Weintraub will speak at the Williamson County Public Library on Sept. 18 to discuss questions posed in his book “Life on Mars.” As part of the Vanderbilt at the Library series, Weintraub will address questions about the law and legal restrictions on governments or private citizens who attempt to go to Mars, among other topics. The Tennessee Secretary of State’s office is kicking off its third annual civics essay contest for students. The goal is to encourage students to be actively engaged citizens by recognizing their important roles as citizens of Tennessee. The theme of this year’s essay contest is leadership. Student winners will receive a TNStars 529 Program College Savings scholarship of $100, $250, or $500, in addition to a trip to the State Capitol.
