The ACLU of Tennessee is hosting Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, at an event on Oct. 19. “On the Front Lines: Fighting Family Separation” will take place at 11 a.m. at the Nashville Public Library, 615 Church St. 37219. Gelernt is the lead attorney in the ACLU’s national class action lawsuit to stop the practice of separating immigrant families at the border. The history of the Highlander dates back to 1932 when founders Michael Horton and Don West established the school, a place that taught literacy and fought for justice and equality. It would later host prominent civil rights leaders such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and Septima Clark. Now a new play at the University of Tennessee will recapture the vision behind the school and some of the key events in its history, WBIR reports. The play opens tonight.

The Federalist Society will host Department of Defense polygraph operator Brian Morris for a presentation on polygraphs and their use in criminal investigations. The Tennessee Judicial Conference Foundation, Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association and Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association will team up for the 20th Annual Dick Jerman Memorial Golf Tournament Oct. 14 at noon. The golf scramble will be held at the Jackson Country Club, 31 Country Club Ln., Jackson 38305. Funds raised at the event will benefit the Tennessee Judicial Conference Foundation’s scholarship fund. The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee will honor Susan L. Kay, practice of law professor and associate dean at Vanderbilt University Law School, with its Lifetime Achievement Award at an upcoming fundraiser. The group reports that Kay has been a tenacious champion for criminal justice reform, better jail conditions, TennCare compliance and the effectiveness of counsel in capital cases. The event, set for Nov. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Noah Liff Opera Center in Nashville, also will feature music and a silent auction. Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased online or by calling the ACLU at 615-320-7142.

The Community Legal Center will celebrate 25 years of working to ensure justice for those in need with an evening at the Crosstown Theater in Memphis on Nov. 19. The “Silver Celebration” will include a seated dinner catered by Chef Kelly English's Restaurant Iris and the sounds of the Mighty Souls Brass Band.
