Lipscomb University’s Fred D. Gray Institute for Law, Justice & Society will host “A Conversation with the Women of the Tennessee Supreme Court” on Feb. 10 at the George Shinn Center. The event will feature sitting justices Cornelia A. Clark, Holly Kirby and Sharon G. Lee and former justices Janice Holder and Penny White, who will talk about the law, the court and their lives. TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson will moderate the event. A reception begins at 6 p.m. followed by dinner and program at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 each. Proceeds benefit the Fred D. Gray Scholarship, which is given to students majoring in Law, Justice and Society. Access the event program.

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold its Attorney of the Day Clinic on Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. each day. Volunteer attorneys will be in Room 134 of the Judge D’Army Bailey Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave., to meet with pro se litigants and provide advice, counsel and referrals. Clients are seen on a first-come first-serve basis.

The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold a free legal clinic from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Nashville Public Library, 615 Church St., Nashville 37219. The clinic will address issues such as conservatorships, wills and estates, homeownership, landlord problems, family problems, debt, employment issues and government benefits. Kyle A. Hixson, the newest Knox County criminal court judge, was sworn into office earlier this week and will begin hearing cases Monday, WBIR reports. A formal investiture will take place Thursday at 3 p.m. EST. Gov. Bill Lee will perform the ceremony at the Tennessee Supreme Court Building in Knoxville, 505 Main St., Ste 200, Knoxville 37902. A former Knox County prosecutor, Hixson was appointed to the bench to take the place of retiring judge Bob McGee.

Knoxville-area legal organizations will hold their monthly Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic on Jan. 8 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office. Lawyers interested in volunteering can sign up online to help. The clinic is a joint project of the Knoxville Bar Association and its Access to Justice Committee; the Knoxville Barristers and it’s Access to Justice Committee; Legal Aid of East Tennessee; the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office; the University of Tennessee College of Law; Lincoln Memorial University’s Duncan School of Law; and the local Veterans Affairs office.

The clinics are available to all veterans and their family members and offer help with a range of legal issues. The newly-announced TBA Leadership Law (TBALL) Class of 2020 will kick off its class year with a three-day Opening Retreat next week at Henry Horton State Park in Chapel Hill. The 2020 class will be the 17th group of attorneys to come through the TBALL program and will meet monthly, learning about leadership in the legal profession, issues in the courts, policymaking in state government and the importance of community service. The class will graduate in June 2020 during the TBA Annual Convention in Knoxville.

The ABA Law Student Division Region 4 Client Counseling Competition will be held Feb. 7-8 at the Duncan School of Law in Knoxville. Region 4 includes schools from Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. This year’s topic is estate planning. The competition is looking for attorneys, judges and counselors to judge preliminary rounds on Friday (4-7:30 p.m.) and Saturday (9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.), and the semifinal round (2-4 p.m.) and final round (4:30-7:30 p.m.) on Saturday. The competition, which simulates a law office consultation between the student and a “client,” is designed to develop interviewing, planning and analytical skills in the lawyer-client relationship. Lawyers interested in volunteering should contact Elton Hutton at 770-765-2360 by Jan. 5.
