The Vanderbilt University Law School chapter of the American Constitution Society is sponsoring a conversation with voting rights expert Joshua Douglas Thursday at noon in the Flynn Auditorium. Douglas teaches elections rights and voting law at the University of Kentucky College of Law. His recent book, “Vote for US: How to Take Back Our Elections and Change the Future of Voting,” looks at the efforts being taken to make our voting system more accessible, reliable and effective. The event is free and open to the public, and lunch will be provided.

The Duncan School of Law at Lincoln Memorial University and Tennesseans for Historical Justice (THJ) will present “Dealing with the Ethical Implications of Past Crimes involving Racism with an Examination of the Elbert Williams Case” on Feb. 21. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the law school, 601 W. Summit Hill Dr. Knoxville 37902. The forum is free to attend or $10 if attendees would like to eat breakfast. Speakers include John Ashworth, a member of THJ, who has done extensive civil rights work in West Tennessee; Cynthia Deitle, a retired FBI special agent who spent 22 years dealing with hate crimes, police brutality and public corruption; and Jim Emison, who has worked to honor NAACP officer Elbert Williams, who was murdered in Brownsville. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold a free legal clinic from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Nashville Public Library, 615 Church St., Nashville 37219. The clinic will address issues such as conservatorships, wills and estates, homeownership, landlord problems, family problems, debt, employment issues and government benefits. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will continue its Veteran’s Project next week in Nashville. The project is a free weekly legal clinic for veterans across Middle Tennessee that provides the opportunity for veterans to speak with a lawyer and identify and address civil legal issues. The next clinic will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 5 at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., Nashville. For more information, contact Kendra Cheek.

Nominations are being accepted for the TBA’s Public Service and Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Initiative Awards. The Annual Public Service Awards are presented to outstanding public service and pro bono attorneys and law student while the CCPBI Awards recognize a law firm and legal department that exemplify commitment to access to justice ideals and pro bono service. The three Public Service Awards will be presented at the annual Public Service Luncheon on Friday, April 3. The CCPBI Awards will be presented at the 14th Annual CCPBI Gala on Saturday, April 4. Both events will be held at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville in conjunction with the TBA Annual Leadership Conference. The deadline for submitting nominations for all awards is Monday, Feb. 17. For more information, contact TBA Access to Justice Director Liz Todaro.

The Knoxville Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Section is partnering with Legal Aid of East Tennessee, with the support and involvement of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne H. Bauknight, to create a Pro Bono Debt Relief Clinic that will provide pro bono legal services to income eligible consumer debtors. The next clinic will take place on Feb. 8 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. Lipscomb University’s Fred D. Gray Institute for Law, Justice & Society will host “A Conversation with the Women of the Tennessee Supreme Court” on Feb. 10 at the George Shinn Center. The event will feature sitting justices Cornelia A. Clark, Holly Kirby and Sharon G. Lee and former justices Janice Holder and Penny White, who will talk about the law, the court and their lives. TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson will moderate the event. A reception begins at 6 p.m. followed by dinner and program at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 each. Proceeds benefit the Fred D. Gray Scholarship, which is given to students majoring in Law, Justice and Society.

The University of Memphis School of Law Office of Diversity & Inclusion will host its annual Diversity & Pre-Law Day on Feb. 22. This year's program will feature information about the school's diversity programming, a mock trial demonstration and a keynote luncheon from Memphis Law alum Tomeka Hart, who is senior program officer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
