Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold free legal clinics over the phone this week on Thursday and Saturday. Local attorneys will offer advice on questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, applying for SNAP benefits and applying for unemployment benefits. Thursday’s clinic will take place from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. CDT and the Saturday clinic will run from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. CDT. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold four legal clinics by phone this week. General legal clinics will be held on Tuesday from 4:30-6:30 p.m.; on Thursday from 3-4 p.m.; and on Saturday from 8:30-11 a.m. Then on Wednesday, LAS will hold a clinic specifically for veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those needing assistance can call 800-238-1443 during any of these times. Also on Wednesday, the group will broadcast the next installment of its Facebook Live Show answering questions about how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting particular areas of law. Join Mary Gillum at noon CDT that day to learn more about tax issues and IRS stimulus payments.

The Legal Services Corporation will host a virtual briefing on Domestic Violence and Civil Legal Services during the Coronavirus Pandemic on May 11 from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. CDT. Rep. David E. Price, D-North Carolina, Rep. Susan W. Brooks, R-Indiana, and Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisconsin, will deliver remarks during the briefing and Chief Justice Cheri Beasley from the Supreme Court of North Carolina will provide an update on how North Carolina’s courts have handled the pandemic. A panel will also be held to discuss serving domestic violence survivors during the COVID-19 pandemic with attorney panelists from civil legal organizations from across the country. The University of Memphis School of Law has announced it will hold its spring commencement online at 10 a.m. CDT on May 9. The program will be live streamed on the school’s YouTube channel. Those interested in watching are encouraged to subscribe to the channel to receive updates and notifications about the event.

The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands has launched a weekly Facebook Live show to answer frequently asked legal questions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. The show will air for the first time this Wednesday at noon CDT. This week’s episode will feature William Bush and Deven Wilson, who will talk about unemployment eligibility and appeals during COVID-19.
