AutoZone, Bass, Berry & Sims, and Memphis Area Legal Services will team up to offer free legal services to Memphis-area seniors at the 15th annual “Give a Little, Help a Lot” pro bono legal aid clinic on July 16 at the Orange Mound Senior Center. The event, which has helped hundreds of seniors since it began in 2009, will provide low-income seniors with assistance in preparing advance care plans, health care directives, durable power of attorney forms, wills and other important legal documents. Attorneys, paralegals and volunteers will work one-on-one with seniors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee last week announced a yearlong America 250 celebration across the state, unveiling the theme “Tennessee: The Original Frontier” and kicking off a 95-county tour to honor the state's contributions to America’s history and culture. Lee began the celebration July 1 with a Farmland Preservation Tour across the state’s three grand divisions, highlighting Tennessee’s agricultural heritage and signing the Farmland Preservation Act. Additional events and grant opportunities tied to the celebration will be announced by the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial, with updates available at TN250.com.

Metro Nashville Arts will host an official dedication ceremony for a new mural, “They Fought With Words: Leaders, Lawyers and Educators," at the Looby Community Center on July 16. The artwork, created by Creative Girls Rock with lead artist Elisheba Israel Mrozik, celebrates the life and legacy of Nashville lawyer and civil rights icon Z. Alexander Looby. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. CDT. The program will begin at 1 p.m. in the Looby Theater. Those interested in attending can register here.

The next free advice clinic for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits is set for July 17 in Nashville.  The clinic, sponsored by the Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts and Bradley, provides assistance with business formation and corporate governance, review of contracts and guidance in navigating local ordinances and state regulations. The TBA offices will be closed Thursday for Juneteenth, a federal and state holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Specifically, it marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The TBA will reopen on Friday at 8 a.m. CDT. Staff information, including emails and direct phone lines, can be accessed on the TBA website.

The Knoxville Bar Association and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET), will hold a Debt Relief Clinic on June 28 to provide pro bono legal services to income-eligible consumer debtors. The clinic will begin at 9 a.m. EDT at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. Judge Suzanne Bauknight will present a short overview of the bankruptcy system and then volunteer lawyers will conduct initial meetings with the clients to discuss their situations and options.
