Lawyers are invited to join Clio, the TBA’s benefit partner for legal practice software, on July 22 at 9 a.m. CDT for a special meetup. The session "How to be an Advocate for Access to Justice and Legal Reform" will feature representatives from the ACLU and the California Innocence Project speaking on how lawyers can become stronger advocates for equal justice and reform and promote systemic change from within. Those who cannot attend the live session can still register to receive a recording of the program.

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will host three phone clinics this week for members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. Clinics will take place tomorrow from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Wednesday from 4-6 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Those needing assistance may call 800-238-1443 during these times. The Knoxville Bar Association will host the 19th Amendment at 100: Bold Women Change History virtual program on Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. – noon CDT. The event features a panel of noteworthy female lawyers and lawmakers, including TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson, Knox County District Attorney General Charme P. Allen, State Sen. Becky Duncan, Justice Sharon G. Lee and Wanda Sobieski of Messer & Elledge. The panel is part of the KBA’s Law Day celebration and will focus on the history of the 19th Amendment, the contributions of trailblazing women and what happens when we break down barriers. The Memphis Bar Association is fielding a team for St. Jude’s virtual marathon on Dec. 5. Team members have set a goal of raising $20,000 for the hospital, which treats childhood cancers and pediatric diseases at no cost to families. To help everyone prepare, the MBA will hold a series of free informational webinars on nutrition, fitness and choosing the best running/walking shoes, and provide access to programs to meet individual goals. The annual TBA Academy offers an exciting opportunity for Tennessee attorneys to be admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. The 37th Annual Academy will take place Dec. 6-7 in Washington, D.C. A select group of Tennessee attorneys will be able to take part in a private ceremony before the court and earn three hours of CLE credit. The group will stay at the Hay Adams Hotel, where the TBA has obtained a special rate for participants. Registration materials must be submitted by Oct. 1. The three African Americans who have served as president of the American Bar Association will be featured in the first of a three-part webinar series titled “Black Lawyers in America: A National Town Hall Series” on July 7 from 1-2:30 p.m. EDT. Former presidents Dennis Archer, Paulette Brown and Robert Grey Jr. will be joined by current ABA President Judy Perry Martinez. Joseph K. West, partner and chief diversity and inclusion officer for the Duane Morris law firm, will serve as moderator. Register here or download a flyer. The series will examine the struggle for change and racial equity in the legal profession. Following the three sessions, the ABA will release a toolkit and a Q&A framework that law firms can tailor to their needs. Dates for the other sessions have not yet been announced.

The Nashville Bar Association and the Lawyers Association for Women are joining forces to host 100 Years of Woman Suffrage: Honoring the Past, Looking to the Future, an event that will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The program will take place in the House Chamber of the Tennessee State Capitol where the pivotal vote was cast giving women the right to vote. Attendees will hear from Margaret Behm, Judge Martha "Cissy" Craig Daughtrey, Justice Anita Earls, Freda Player-Peters, Rebecca Price and Linda Wynne. The event will take place on Aug. 13 from 1:30 - 4 p.m. CDT. If an in-person event is not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers plan to hold the event virtually.

The Nashville Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will hold its 17th Annual Race Judicata virtually this year. Participants are asked to register for either a 5K or 10K run and complete one of the recommended courses before July 12. A $10 registration fee will go to local nonprofits Achilles International and ABLE Youth. There will not be any official timing but participants are asked to post their results on the honor system! When the race period is closed, virtual champions will be crowned.
