The Nashville Chapter of the American Constitution Society (ACS) will host its annual Supreme Court Preview virtually this year on Sept. 23 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. CDT. The program will include a discussion with ACS President and former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold followed by a discussion of the upcoming Supreme Court term with Vanderbilt University Law School Professor Ganesh Sitaraman. A virtual reception will follow the program. Cost is $10 for those working in the public sector, academia or the judicial branch, as well as students. Cost is $25 for those working in the private sector.

YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee will host Stand Against Racism: Healthcare in a Time of Crisis on Sept. 24 from noon until 1 p.m. CDT. The event will examine the devastating effects of COVID-19 on communities of color. Kinika Young, senior director of health policy and advocacy for the Tennessee Justice Center will be among the panelists of healthcare experts. The event is virtual and free for all those who register.

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will host a phone clinic this Saturday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. CDT for members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. The Nashville Conflict Resolution Center and Vanderbilt University’s Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership will host a facilitated conversation titled “Society in Conflict” by Zoom next Tuesday. The event is free and will run from 12:30 to 2 p.m. CDT. The program will focus on public health and education. Speakers include Meharry Medical College President Dr. James Hildreth, Vanderbilt professor Dr. Marisa Cannata and Juliana Ospina Cano, executive director of Conexion Americas. The Tennessee Bar Association will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. The TBA's virtual office will reopen on Tuesday at 8 a.m. CDT with all staff continuing to work remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In late August, the Niota Depot Preservation Committee held a ceremony unveiling the U.S. Post Office's new "19th Amendment: Women Vote" stamp. The group intended to live stream the event on its Facebook page but technical issues interfered with those plans. The group announced this week that a re-broadcast of the event is now available on the Facebook page of Tyler Boyd, the great-nephew of Rep. Harry Burn. Rep. Burn, who was from Niota, cast the deciding vote for Tennessee to ratify the 19th Amendment.

The ABA Standing Committee on Disaster Response and Preparedness will offer a free five-part series on the intersection of disasters and race throughout the month of September, which is recognized as National Preparedness Month. The first program addresses the issue that recovery efforts after natural disasters can be discriminatory. A panel of experts discuss the policy considerations of recovery, the intersection of race and policy in disasters, and how the confluence of COVID-19 and future disasters may impact this issue. The Knoxville Bar Association and Legal Aid of East Tennessee will hold a virtual Legal Advice Clinic for Veterans on Sept. 16 from noon to 2 p.m. EDT. This will be a general advice clinic that will cover a wide variety of legal issues, including family law, landlord/tenant, bankruptcy, criminal defense, consumer protection, contract disputes, child support and personal injury.
