Knoxville area legal professionals are invited to celebrate the annual Red Mass this Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, 711 S. Northshore Dr., Knoxville 37919. A time-honored tradition of the Catholic Church, the Red Mass is celebrated for judges, attorneys, law school professors, students and government officials.

The TBA LGBT Section will host a virtual roundtable on Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 1 to 2 p.m. CST. This opportunity will feature ethics considerations for attorneys when working from home, an open discussion on issues affecting LGBT lawyers and staying sane in a pandemic. The event is free and open to all TBA members. For those who would like CLE credit, there will be a $45 course filing fee. Connection info will be sent the week of the program.

Register now to virtually run with the East Tennessee Lawyers Association for Women team in the 2020 Komen East Tennessee Race for the Cure! While the race can’t be held in-person this year, the virtual event will be held on Oct. 31 at 8:30 a.m. EDT. Team participation is open to all ETLAW members, their friends, families and pets. Go to the ETLAW team page to join the team or make a donation on behalf of a team member. The Knoxville Race raises funds that go directly back to local neighbors for mammograms, treatment and things as basic as food, gas and rent. Survivors will be honored in a one-mile Car Parade ending at World’s Fair Park which can be livestreamed on the Komen East Tennessee Facebook page.

The Ben F. Jones Chapter of the National Bar Association will hold its annual Barristers’ Ball virtually this year on Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. CST. This year’s theme is “A Night of Good Trouble: Honoring Our Freedom Fighters and Continuing the Pursuit for Justice.” The event will include an opportunity for attendees to connect, celebrate scholarship and award recipients, and reflect on the organization’s goals to be engaged, respected and relevant. Tickets are $75 for attendance only or $125 for attendance and dinner delivery from local Memphis restaurants. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold the last phone clinic of the month on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT. LAS is looking for attorneys to help members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. The Tennessee Supreme Court Administrative Office of the Courts and Access to Justice Commission, Tennessee Housing Development Agency and Tennessee Department of Human Services will host a first-of-its-kind virtual eviction summit on Oct. 1 to help facilitate solutions across the state to address the coming residential eviction crisis. According to organizers, the free event is designed for all stakeholders in the eviction process, including judges, court clerks, attorneys, tenants, landlords, mediators, law students and law school faculty, nonprofits, social workers, homelessness prevention and assistance agencies, legislators, and state and local government employees. The program will begin at 10 a.m. CDT. Register here to watch on Zoom. Morning plenary sessions will be livestreamed on YouTube and can be watched there without registering.

The TBA’s Criminal Justice Section Executive Council is seeking volunteer lawyers to assist with the section’s annual “Crim Law Day” initiative for students at the Duncan School of Law and University of Tennessee College of Law. The program will take place via Zoom on Nov. 17 with sessions from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and noon to 1:30 p.m. EST. The program will feature a general discussion between defense lawyers and prosecutors followed by breakout sessions where students will be paired with volunteer lawyers to ask questions and discuss hypotheticals. To volunteer, contact TBA staff member and Criminal Justice Section Coordinator Jarod Word.

The East Tennessee Lawyers’ Association for Women will host a park walk and talk with Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon on Oct. 7. Those interested in attending should gather in Lakeshore Park at the Marble Pavilion at 5:15 p.m. At 6:15 pm., attendees will enjoy a social time. Significant others and children are welcome and individually packaged refreshments will be provided.
