The American Bar Association TIPS Animal Law Committee is seeking a Tennessee lawyer to advise an animal shelter on strengthening its foster care program as part of a pro bono project to help shelters build resilience during the pandemic. Use your contracting and lawyering skills — no animal law experience required. Through the project, you’ll receive template foster care agreements and access to an experienced attorney mentor. The Nashville Bar Association will hold its 2020 Annual Meeting virtually on Dec. 9 from 4 to 5 p.m. CST. The event will include recognition of outgoing board members, award winners and the next class of the NBA Board. The event is free but registration is required. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold four phone clinics next week for members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. Clinics will take place Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. All times central. LAS is looking for attorneys to help answer questions. TBA sponsor Attorney's Insurance Mutual of the South will host a roundtable focused on cybersecurity issues — including phishing emails, ransomware attacks and computer security — on Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. CST. Alabama attorney J.S. “Chris” Christie Jr., a partner at Sirote & Permutt in Birmingham, will lead the discussion. Christie frequently speaks and writes on a range of issue. He says cyber scams are increasingly focusing on law firms, especially as more lawyers work remotely. Register by 11 a.m. CST the morning of the program to receive the log in information.

This year's program will focus on the “Road to Success” with YLD members sharing their experiences on how they chose their practice area, bar exam study tips and habits, how to network, mental health wellness and more. The Tennessee Faith and Justice Alliance will conclude its fourth annual Pro Bono & Faith Days with a virtual training for those in East Tennessee tomorrow at 2 p.m. EDT. The program will feature a panel discussion around the intersection of faith, pro bono and racial justice; legal resource trainings; and virtual legal clinic information. Panelists include Executive Director of the Knoxville Police Advisory & Review Committee Lakenya Middlebrook, East Tennessee State University’s Vice President for Equity and Inclusion Dr. Keith Johnson and more. Police use of force has long been a polarizing topic, but this year the issue has taken on new relevance. To help TBA members better understand the issue, the TBA Local Government Section will host a roundtable discussion on Monday from 2 to 3 p.m. CDT with Jeff Hughes, police chief for the city of Brentwood; Maggi Duncan, executive director of the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police; and John Buntin, Metro Nashville director of policy and community safety. The panel will examine use of force policies, tactics, training and community oversight. The event is free but registration is required.
