The Memphis Bar Association will hold its 2020 Annual Meeting virtually on Dec. 3 at noon CST. In addition to electing new leaders, the meeting will feature the presentation of two awards. The Judge Jerome Turner Lawyer’s Lawyer Award will be presented to Bruce McMullen with Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz while the Sam A. TBA’s member advantage partner The Bar Plan will offer a one-hour presentation on understanding malpractice insurance next Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. CST. Company president Karen McCarthy will discuss the differences in policy coverage available to lawyers seeking to protect their practice from malpractice claims. The roundtable is free but registration is required. Please register before 9 a.m. on the day of the event to receive the Zoom invitation in time. The Bar Plan offers professional liability, business, court bonds, workers' compensation, group term life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.

The Memphis Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society will host the virtual event, Civil Liberties and COVID-19 Shelter in Place Orders, on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CST. Julia Mahoney, John S. The YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee will hold its annual Stand Against Racism program this Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. CST. The virtual event will focus on “Public Safety in a Time of Crisis,” exploring why distrust of police exists in many communities and ways policing can be changed to address community concerns. Speakers include representatives from the American Muslim Advisory Council, Conexión Américas, Gideon’s Army and Nashville Community Oversight Board. The Knoxville Bar Association will hold a Virtual Annual Meeting & Elections on Dec. 11 at 8:30 a.m. EST. The meeting will include a recognition of outgoing board members and award winners, as well as votes on bylaws changes and new board members. At the end of the meeting, Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon G. Lee will issue the oath of office to incoming KBA President Cheryl G. Rice. Members interested in attending should register by 4 p.m. on Dec. 10 to receive a personalized link. For non-members interested in the event, the program will be recorded and made available afterward.

This month’s installment will focus on franchise and excise tax exemptions, including asset-backed securitization, facilities owned by the armed forces, state and federal credit unions, qualified low-income community structures and historic property preservation. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold three phone clinics next week for members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. Clinics will take place Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m., Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. All times central. LAS is looking for attorneys to help answer questions. The Knoxville Pro Bono Community will gather virtually on Thursday at 6 p.m. EST for the 2020 Forging Justice Pro Bono Night Celebration. Among the evening’s activities will be the presentation of several awards. Clint Wren will receive the Pro Bono Student of the Year Award, Katie Jones will receive Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award, the McNabb Center will be recognized as the Pro Bono Community Partner of the Year, London Amburn will be recognized as the Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year, and Dave Yoder will receive the Donald F. Paine Memorial Pro Bono Hall of Fame Award. View the invitation or register to attend. Tickets are $50. All proceeds benefit the pro bono work of Legal Aid of East Tennessee. The TBA’s Young Lawyers Division will wrap up its virtual law school visits this week, with calls scheduled with students at the University of Memphis School of Law tomorrow and Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law on Wednesday. This year's program is focusing on the “Road to Success” for 3L and 4L students. YLD members are sharing their experiences on topics including how they chose their practice area, bar exam study tips and habits, how to network as a law student and young professional, mental health wellness and more.
