The Community Legal Center of Memphis will host a benefit concert on April 1 at 7 p.m. CDT. “Cash for the CLC” will feature virtual performances and in-depth discussion on justice work in Memphis with Rosanne Cash. Local artist John Paul Keith will also be performing. The event is free to attend, but donations to the CLC are encouraged. RSVP to the benefit through the CLC’s Facebook page. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold four phone clinics this week for members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. Clinics are Tuesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., with a special focus on disaster assistance. The Tennessee World Affairs Council (TNWAC) will present two programs this month on legal and diplomatic professions available for those who would like to work in international affairs. On March 23, the council will hold a discussion with six women law professionals working in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Panelists will share their insights and perspectives and talk about education and preparation, the nature of their work, and the ups and downs of their trade. Then on March 25, the council will host a panel that will talk about jobs and careers in international diplomacy, including working in the foreign service and the U.S. State Department. The first Friday in March is “National Employee Appreciation Day” and a great time to recognize that despite the unique challenges of the last year, TBA staff members have not missed a beat. They have shown flexibility and creativity in continued service to members. The TBA will be closed Friday in appreciation for those contributions to the association.

The Nashville Bar Association and Nashville Bar Foundation will hold their annual golf tournament May 13 at the Hermitage Golf Course in Old Hickory. The fun begins at noon with range balls. The tournament starts at 1 p.m. and runs through 6 p.m. Entry fees include range balls, greens fee, cart, beverages, snacks and dinner. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold its third annual Breakfast of Champions virtually on April 7 from 8 to 9 a.m. CDT. This signature fundraising event brings together Middle Tennessee’s legal community and business leaders to support the work of LAS. This year, Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton will join the event as the guest speaker. Registration will be open soon.

The ABA is hosting a program this week featuring a panel of six trailblazing Black judges who will discuss the obstacles they have overcome in the legal profession. Judge Bernice Donald of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, and the first Black female judge in Tennessee, will be among the panelists in the program titled, “Judicial Trailblazers and the Hills They've Climbed: A Discussion with Preeminent African-American Judges and Their Challenges and Triumphs.” Howard University School of Law Dean Danielle R. Holley-Walker will moderate the panel, which will take place on Friday from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. CST. The event is free and registration is now open.

The Tennessee Bar Association is making available the program Empowering Lawyers as Leaders for viewing during February and March. Produced jointly by the TBA and the Tennessee American Inns of Court, this program brings together influential lawyers and leaders from across the state to share their experiences and to examine the role of leadership in the legal profession. Speakers discuss the importance of leading by example to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and professionalism in everyday practice. Among those featured are former Supreme Court Justice and Nashville School of Law Dean William C. Koch Jr., former Sen. Lamar Alexander and the Hon. Bernice B. Donald.

The Alcoa-Blount County NAACP will host its third annual Founder’s Day Freedom Fund Gala from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 via Zoom, the Daily Times reports. During the event, the chapter will award three $1,000 Freedom Fund scholarships and present two with its Game Changers Award in recognition of engagement in social justice and advocacy work. The keynote speaker will be Blount County native Ronald Coffin, who was one of the first four African American students to desegregate Maryville High School in 1963. Registrants are asked to donate $50 to the local NAACP Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 6347, Maryville, TN 37802-6347. Register for the event here.
