Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Holly Kirby will be featured in an upcoming event from the Memphis Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society on March 25 at noon CDT. The program, The Tennessee Constitution: Its History and Key Distinctives, will take place virtually. Those who wish to register may do so by contacting Greg Grisham or by signing up online. Vanderbilt University Assistant Professor of History Brandon R. Byrd will deliver the next lecture in Vanderbilt Law School’s Dean’s Lecture Series on Race and Discrimination. He will speak on “The Unfinished Revolution: Race, Law, and the Struggle for Haitian Sovereignty.” The online event will take place tomorrow beginning at noon CDT. The event is free and open to the public. The annual lecture series convenes scholars and thought leaders to discuss race, civil rights, discrimination and critical historical milestones. The ABA Judicial Division is presenting “Judicial Milestones in the Quest for Women’s Equality” on March 26 at 11 a.m. CDT. The program will feature a diverse panel of female judges who will discuss challenges on the bench and offer insights on their achievements and more. The program is free of charge. Register online

The Knoxville Bar Association will host a Faith and Justice Legal Advice Clinic April 13-15. The Faith and Justice Alliance seeks to build a coalition of faith leaders in the Knoxville area and to host legal advice clinics to give people a less intimidating environment to talk to a lawyer. This is a general advice clinic with volunteers prepared to advise on a wide variety of legal issues, including family law, landlord/tenant, bankruptcy, criminal defense, consumer protection, contract disputes, child support and personal injury, among other issues. Participants have until April 7 to register for the clinic.

Organize Tennessee, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to voter protection and education, will host a poll watching training on March 27 from noon to 1 p.m. CDT. The training will provide information on up-to-date election laws, common poll watching incidents and details on how to become a poll watcher. In honor of Women’s History Month, the TBA has rallied its past, current and future female presidents for a one-hour conversation on their experiences, influences and the impact women have made on the legal profession. The virtual panel will take place on March 24 from 3 to 4 p.m. CDT. TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson will moderate the panel, which will include: former TBA presidents Sarah Sheppeard, Cindy Wyrick, Jackie Dixon, Gail Ashworth, Marcy Eason and Kathryn Reed Edge; TBA Vice President Tasha Blakney; TBA President-elect Sherie Edwards; and current TBA President Michelle Greenway Sellers. Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors is holding a free virtual seminar on March 25 at 2 p.m. CDT to provide an overview of the U.S. immigration system and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold four phone clinics this week for members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. Clinics are Monday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m., Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. All times central. LAS is looking for attorneys to help answer questions. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands has announced dates for a series of virtual legal clinics to assist victims of the March 2020 Middle Tennessee tornadoes. The clinics, held for low-income residents of Davidson, Putnam and Wilson counties, will be staffed by pro bono attorneys with experience in legal issues stemming from natural disasters. The Davidson County clinic will be held this Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. CST. More information can be found here.
