Legal organizations in Knoxville will hold a virtual Veterans Legal Advice Clinic Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. EDT. The clinic is a general advice and referral clinic that serves between 20 and 30 veterans each month with a wide variety of legal issues. To volunteer, sign up online. The Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services is soliciting CLE session proposals for this year's Equal Justice University (EJU), being held virtually on Sept. 9 and 10. The organization is seeking proposals in the areas of elder law, employment law, family law, health and benefits, housing and consumer issues, education, juvenile justice, professional skills and financial management. Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold four phone clinics, starting tomorrow, for members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. Clinics are tomorrow from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (with a special focus on disaster issues), Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. All times central. Join the TBA Animal Law Section on April 27 from 11 a.m. to noon CDT for a roundtable discussion on the discovery and rescue of neglected, suffering animals and the often complex legal consequences of those lifesaving efforts. Learn about recent rescues in Carroll and Putnam counties and the protracted legal battles that followed, including issues related to forensic evidence and cost-of-care laws. Nationally recognized animal law practioner Bruce Wagman and Animal Rescue Corps Executive Director Tim Woodward will headline this free event. One hour of CLE credit is available on request for a fee of $45 for TBA members. An optional 30-minute Q&A will follow the webcast.

West Tennessee Legal Services will host its annual Law Day event on May 3 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. CDT. West Tennessee native Jim Emison is set to present on this year’s theme, “Advancing the Rule of Law Now.” Emison is an award winning lawyer who has been investigating the civil rights cold case murder of Elbert Williams in Brownsville, Tennessee. WTLS will also be recognizing pro bono attorneys in the area for their continued commitment to providing access to justice for all West Tennesseans. The free event will be held virtually and online registration is now open.

The service will honor 17 lawyers who have died in the last 15 months, including former TBA President and federal judge Pamela Reeves. KBA President Cheryl Rice, Rev. The Memphis Bar Association and Center for Excellence in Decision Making will present Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America on April 6 from 3 to 6 p.m. CDT. The virtual program will be presented by the director of the Who We Are Project, Jeffrey Robinson, and will explore how legalized discrimination and state-sanctioned brutality, murder, dispossession and disenfranchisement put African Americans at a great disadvantage when trying to accumulate wealth and gain access to jobs, housing, education and healthcare. Vanderbilt University John L. Seigenthaler Professor of American History Rhonda Y. Williams will deliver the next lecture in Vanderbilt Law School’s Dean’s Lecture Series on Race and Discrimination beginning tomorrow at noon CDT. Williams is a historian of low-income Black women’s and marginalized people’s experiences, everyday lives, politics and social struggles. Her research contributes to the rethinking of gender, political identity, citizenship, civil rights, Black liberation struggles and interactions with the U.S. state. The lecture series seeks to provide foundational knowledge on race, civil rights, discrimination on the basis of gender and sexual orientation, and critical historical milestones and their importance.
