The Tennessee State Library and Archives will host a one-day-only public display of Tennessee’s three original constitutions in celebration of Statehood Day, TNJ: On the Hill reports. The documents will go on display from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. CDT on June 1 at the New Library and Archives building, located at 1001 Rep. John Lewis Way N. on the northeast corner of the Bicentennial Mall State Park in Nashville. Several additional events and exhibits will be held to celebrate Tennessee’s 225th Statehood Day, including a special exhibit from the Tennessee State Museum and a special event at the Bicentennial Mall State Park featuring remarks from Gov. Bill Lee. Statehood Day events are free and reservations are not required.

Above the Law will host a free webinar next Monday on the basics of non-fungible tokens, known as NFTs. The program will address what NFTs are as well as an array of legal issues that can arise with their usage, including securities laws, money laundering laws, financial regulatory issues, patents and other intellectual property protections, licensing, monitoring and enforcement. The 2021 TBA Annual Convention, presented this year as both an in-person and virtual event, will offer two roundtables for attendees to learn more about important issues affecting the practice of law. On Monday, June 14, at 3 p.m. CDT, TBA President-elect Sherie Edwards will moderate a discussion between Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee, Nashville lawyer and former TBA president Jackie Dixon with Weatherly & Dixon, and retired Memphis lawyer and former TBA president Bill Haltom, who will share their experiences and thoughts on the topic of civility in the legal profession. Then on Tuesday, leaders will discuss the TBA’s new Law Practice Management Center, which offers resources for launching, building and leading a firm. The Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States will hold its first meeting on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EDT. The meeting will be conducted virtually and is open to the public. Those who would like to attend must register at info@pcscotus.gov by submitting full name, organization (if applicable), email address and phone number. Public comments may also be submitted to the same email address. For more information contact Dana Fowler with the General Services Administration at 202-501-1777. The commission was established last month by President Joe Biden to study various changes to the Supreme Court, including whether to increase the number of justices.

Tennessee law schools will again hold virtual mixers during the week of the TBA Annual Convention in June. These sessions bring together the deans from each school, along with alumni and sometimes students for an update on current issues, challenges and activities on each campus. Register now if you would like to attend. You will be sent a link to the Zoom session for your law school's mixer closer to the event date. Convention registration is not required.

The Nashville Bar Association will hold its Spring Memorial Service on May 27 at 11 a.m. CDT via Zoom. The service will honor 17 lawyers who recently died. Please RSVP to receive a link to view the service. A project of the NBA’s Historical Committee, the memorial service is held in the fall and the spring to honor the memory of Nashville lawyers and judges who have passed away during the preceding six-month period.

The 2021 TBA Annual Convention, presented this year as both an in-person and virtual event, offers eight hours of CLE credit. One of the key offerings will be the annual Bench/Bar Program, which will include three distinct presentations this year. The first two sessions will address neurodiversity in the courtroom and vicarious trauma. The third session will focus on the effect of individual bias on the sentencing process. A panel, including Judge Bernice B. Donald with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, University of Memphis School of Law professor Demetria Frank and University of Tennessee College of Law professor Sherley Cruz, will discuss specific instances of bias in the sentencing phase and offer practical suggestions on how to limit the effect of individual biases. The second session will focus on vicarious trauma and secondary PTSD. Buddy Stockwell, executive director of the Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program (TLAP), will provide an overview of “compassion fatigue” and talk about how he dealt with distressing situations as a family law practitioner. Then TLAP Clinical Director Holly Wade will discuss even more debilitating levels of distress such as PTSD and what therapy and recovery look like for those cases. The program is designed to equip participants to recognize symptoms in themselves and others for early intervention and best outcomes. The Chattanooga and Nashville chapters of the Federalist Society will host a free webinar May 19 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. EST on “The Free Exercise Clause in 2021.” The program will explore two key court cases on the topic: Employment Division v. Smith and Fulton v. City of Philadelphia. Speakers include Lori Windham, with The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty; Notre Dame Law School Professor Richard W. Garnett; and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Professor Kody Cooper. Judge Katherine A. Crytzer of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee will moderate the program.
