Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will host two legal advice clinics this week for members of the public with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, and SNAP and unemployment benefits. An in-person clinic will take place Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at Operation Stand Down Nashville, 1125 12th Ave. S. The second clinic will take place on Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. CDT at the Belmont Ministry Center, 2005 12th Ave. S. To help answer questions, contact Andrae Crismon or Kendra Cheek or call 615-780-7131.

The TBA staff continues to work remotely and you can find contact information for each of them on the TBA.org website. The Tennessee Department of Revenue will host a free webinar for new business owners on June 29 at 9 a.m. CDT. Participants will learn which state taxes apply to their businesses and how to get started properly. The session is part of an ongoing effort by the department to educate Tennesseans about tax issues. Upcoming webinars and an archive of past webinars also are available on the department's website.

The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation will hold a rulemaking hearing on Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. CDT at its offices to consider changes to the rules of the Court of Workers’ Compensation Claims and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Written comments also will be accepted until close of business Aug. 19 and should be sent to Troy Haley. Court of Workers' Compensation Claims Chief Judge Kenneth Switzer recently held several listening sessions to receive feedback from attorneys across the state about changes they would like to see.

Don’t miss this highlight of next week’s TBA Convention! The annual Lawyers Luncheon will take place June 18 at noon CDT at The Peabody in Memphis and via livestream for virtual registrants. Make sure to join in as colleagues from across the state are honored with awards, including the Justice Frank F. Drowota III Award, the Justice Joseph W. Henry Award for Outstanding Legal Writing, the Judge Pamela L. Reeves Tennessee Professionalism Award, and still to be announced Claudia Jack Award, Fourth Estate Award, YLD Fellows William M. Leech Jr. Public Service Award, and President’s Awards for those who served with distinction this past year. The lunch also will include passing of the gavel from TBA President Michelle Greenway Sellers to President-elect Sherie Edwards and oath of office administered by Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Jeffrey S. There is still time to register for the 2021 TBA Annual Convention virtual experience! The virtual option includes all the same CLE and key programs as the in-person option but at a significant savings. Programming will be offered each day next week. Early in the week, Tennessee law school alumni will gather for virtual mixers, while virtual programs will focus on civility, the TBA’s Practice Management Center and legal trends beyond COVID. On Thursday, join colleagues gathered in Memphis for the annual Bench Bar program and popular Better Right Now CLE via Zoom. And on Friday, don’t miss the annual Legislative Update CLE and Lawyers Luncheon, where colleagues will be honored for their service to the bar and the profession, and Nashville lawyer Sherie Edwards will be sworn in as TBA's 142nd president. Legal groups in East Tennessee will hold a virtual pro bono debt relief clinic on June 12. The clinic is available to qualified individuals who live in counties served by Legal Aid of East Tennessee. Volunteer attorneys will conduct initial meetings with clients to discuss their situations and options. Sponsors of the event include Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne Bauknight, the federal bar associations in the Eastern District of Tennessee, Knoxville Bar Association, TBA Young Lawyers Division, Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission and Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services.
