Organize Tennessee, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to voter protection and education, will host a series of virtual poll observer trainings throughout the year. The trainings will provide information on up-to-date election laws, common poll-watching incidents and details on how to protect the vote on election day. The next training will take place on July 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. CDT. Find a list of all training dates and register for the program here.

Since severe storms and flooding struck Nashville in March, members of Nashville Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) have been focused on assisting survivors. The group’s next recovery outreach event is planned for Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. CDT at Plaza Mariachi, 3955 Nolensville Pike, Nashville 37211. Food boxes, stress kits and hygiene kits will be available. Experts also will be on hand to discuss mold exposure, long-term recovery and trauma care. Legal advice on predatory landlords, contractor fraud and renters rights also will be available. Volunteers can sign up here to help. The U.S District Court in Chattanooga has announced a portrait unveiling and reception for retired U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Marcia Phillips Parsons on Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. EDT. Judge Parsons retired in September 2020. More details coming soon.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee will hold an investiture ceremony on Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. EDT to install Charles E. Atchley Jr. as a judge on the court. The ceremony will take place in the third floor courtroom of the Joel Solomon U.S. Courthouse Federal Building, 900 Georgia Ave., Chattanooga 37402. The Legal Aid Society will hold two in-person legal advice clinics next week for those with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, and SNAP and unemployment benefits. The clinics will take place in Nashville on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., and on Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. CDT at the Belmont Ministry Center, 2005 12th Ave. S. The investiture ceremony for U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Tennessee Katherine Crytzer will take place on Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. EDT in the Howard H. Baker Jr. U.S. Courthouse, 800 Market St., Knoxville. Crytzer was nominated for the role by former President Donald Trump and was confirmed to the bench by the U.S. Senate late last year. She was previously the principal deputy assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Policy.

West Tennessee Legal Services (WTLS) will host a bankruptcy and debt relief advice clinic on July 28 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event will be held at the WTLS office at 210 W Main St, Jackson, TN, 38301. The Tennessee Bureau of Workers’ Compensation will offer a free online training beginning this month to help employers develop or enhance the skills and knowledge to coordinate an employee’s return to employment after a work-related injury. The training is part of the bureau’s newly developed REWARD — Returning Employees to Work and Reducing Disabilities — Program. The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts and the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings will provide free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits at a virtual clinic this Friday.
