The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee has released additional details for the Aug. 27 portrait unveiling and memorial for the late Chief Judge Pamela L. Reeves, who died last September. The first part of the service will take place at 1:30 p.m. EDT at the Church Street United Methodist Church, 900 Henley St., Knoxville 37902. Judges Reeves’s family will unveil her portrait and former Gov. Bill Haslam will address the gathering. The Rev. Dr. Jan B. Wade and Rev. Dr. Harold Middlebrook will give an invocation and benediction and Noelle Harb Brundidge will sing “Amazing Grace.” Guests will then proceed to the courthouse courtyard to view a memorial garden, the creation of which was overseen by Chief Magistrate Judge Susan K. Lee and Magistrate Judges Debra C. Poplin and Cynthia R. Wyrick. A reception will follow in the courthouse rotunda entrance.

The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts and the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings will provide free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits at a clinic next Thursday. Eligible businesses may receive up to one hour of pro bono legal assistance. Appointments are first come, first serve. Companies may sign up online. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands (LAS) will hold an in-person legal clinic this Saturday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Belmont Ministry Center, 2005 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37204. Next week, LAS will hold a phone clinic on Tuesday at 2-3:30 p.m. Both of these clinics will serve those with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. Then on Wednesday, a clinic will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for veterans only at Operation Stand Down Nashville, 1125 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203. All times central. The University of Tennessee College of Law is hosting the American Bar Association's 19th Amendment traveling exhibit, "100 Years After the19th Amendment: Their Legacy, and Our Future,” Aug. 13-26 in the Joel A. Katz Law Library. The traveling exhibit, co-sponsored by the Library of Congress, celebrates the anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment with historic photos and artifacts. It also provides details about the story of the battle for ratification, its influence on subsequent movements related to equal rights and gives focus to the challenges that remain. The Memphis Bar Association and the Center for Excellence in Decision-Making will present the Recognizing Implicit Bias Issues in Sentencing virtual program on Aug. 18 from noon until 1:10 p.m. CDT. This free webinar will consist of a panel discussion exploring the effect of individual bias on the criminal justice sentencing process, specific instances of such bias and practical suggestions on how to limit its effect. The panel will include: 6th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Bernice Donald, University of Memphis law professor Demetria Frank, and University of Tennessee law professor Sherley E. Cruz. The discussion will be moderated by Shelby County Chief Public Defender Phyllis Aluko.

Knoxville area legal organizations will hold an in-person veterans’ legal advice clinic on Aug. 11 from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. Those seeking advice should preregister at 865-637-0484. Lawyers who would like to volunteer can sign up online. Masks are optional but should be worn pursuant to CDC guidelines. Volunteers also must accept the terms of the KBA COVID-19 Safety Acknowledgement - Liability Waiver and Release of Claims. Volunteers may choose to continue volunteering by telephone.

The TBA is offering a free webinar on Aug. 24 from noon to 1 p.m. CDT to help lawyers intervene with clients who have substance abuse problems. The program is designed to provide insight into the diagnosis process and how lawyers can help clients take ownership of their lives. The webinar also will highlight the value of building and collaborating with a team of specialized professionals to guide long-term success. Panelists include Arthur Westinghouse, an intervention specialist, family recovery coach, and alcohol and drug counselor; and Nashville lawyer Karl Warden, who has been recognized for his estate planning work. TBA members may request one hour of CLE credit for a $45 fee.

The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) will hold a Bench & Bar Celebration on Sept. 8 to recognize judges and lawyers for their commitment to justice during the COVID-19 pandemic. A short program, including recognition of local judges, will begin at 6:45 p.m. EDT. The event will be held on the outdoor terrace of the Knoxville Convention Center. The cost per person is $20 until Sept. 3 when it increases to $25. Registration deadline is 5 p.m. EDT on Sept. 7. No walk-in registrations will be permitted. The event replaces the traditional Supreme Court Dinner this year.

The clinic will offer help with dismissal, diversion and conviction expungements, voter restoration and court cost waivers and covers charges filed in Shelby County only.
