The Tennessee Department of Revenue has another free tax webinar coming up next week. On Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. CDT, the department will offer an overview of services subject to sales tax in the state. Attendees also will have the opportunity to ask questions of department staff. Register here.

Knoxville area legal organizations will hold an in-person veterans’ legal advice clinic on Sept. 8 from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. Those seeking advice should preregister at 865-637-0484. Lawyers who would like to volunteer can sign up online. Masks are optional but should be worn pursuant to CDC guidelines. Volunteers also must accept the terms of the KBA COVID-19 safety acknowledgement and liability waiver. Volunteers may choose to continue volunteering by telephone.

The U.S District Court in Chattanooga has released reservation details about the upcoming portrait unveiling and reception for retired U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Marcia Phillips Parsons. The event will take place on Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. EDT. Those who would like to attend are asked to RSVP by Sept. 7 to 423-783-2508. Judge Parsons retired in September 2020.

To mark the closing of the Tennessee State Museum exhibition "Ratifed! Tennessee Women and the Right to Vote" and the 101st anniversary of ratification of the 19th Amendment, the museum will host a special event featuring author Elaine Weiss and noted historian Carole Bucy on Sept. 19 from 2 to 3 p.m. CDT. Limited seating will be available. Tickets are free, but reservations are required. The event also will be livestreamed on the museum’s website at TNMuseum.org/Videos. After the discussion, Weiss will sign copies of her book "The Woman’s Hour." Weiss was the keynote speaker at the TBA’s 2020 Virtual Convention.

Former TBA president and Memphis lawyer Bill Haltom will sign copies of his new book “Sears Crosstown in Memphis: From Catalogues to a Concourse” on Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. CDT. The event, sponsored by Burkes Books, will be held at the Crosstown Concourse, 1350 Concourse Ave., Memphis 38104. Haltom writes about the history of Sears Crosstown, the warehouse and distribution center for the company’s mail-order empire. The building was vacated in the 1980s and for decades it remained shuttered until a group of Memphians decided to resurrect the space with a plan most thought was impossible.

The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands (LAS) will hold three legal clinics this week. On Tuesday, a phone clinic will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m.  On Wednesday, an in-person clinic for veterans will be held at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then on Saturday, Aug. 28, an in-person clinic will be held at the Belmont Ministry Center, 2005 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37204. Clinics will offer advice on housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. All times central. An investiture ceremony will be held for Shelby County Chancellor Gadson William “Will” Perry next Wednesday at 3 p.m. CDT at Memphis City Hall, 125 N. Main St. 38103. A reception will follow in the Hall of Mayors. Face masks will be required. View the invitation. For those unable to attend in person, a live stream of the ceremony will be available on the city council’s website or YouTube channel. Perry, formerly a partner at Butler Snow, was named to the bench in June. He replaced former judge Walter L. Evans.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee will host a public reading of the U.S. Constitution in celebration of Constitution Day on Sept. 16. The reading will take place from 11:30 a.m. until roughly 1:30 p.m. EDT at the Joel W. Solomon Federal Building, 900 Georgia Ave. in Chattanooga. The Constitution will be read in 110 segments that take one minute or less to read for the average reader. Those interested in reading a segment can sign up at here. The Tennessee Innocence Project will host a presentation on Aug. 31 at 5:30 p.m. CDT with exoneree and author Anthony Ray Hinton. Admission is free and open to the public. Hinton survived on Alabama’s death row for 30 years after being convicted of killing two fast-food restaurant managers. With the assistance of the Equal Justice Initiative, led by attorney Bryan Stevenson, Hinton was freed in 2015. Since his release, he has traveled the world sharing his story. In 2018, he published “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row,” which chronicles his journey.
