The Nashville chapter of the American Marketing Association will hold a free event on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) next Monday from 4-6 p.m. in the Vince Gill Room at Belmont University's Curb Events Center. Suzanne Reed, chief marketing officer at LBMC, will discuss why marketers should be involved in DEI programs and conversations. Joining her will be Dr. José González, assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship at Belmont University and co-founder of Conexión Américas; Jacqueline Hayes, principal and chief marketing strategist at Crayons & Markers; and Kyle McCluskey, account supervisor and DEI Committee member at GS&F. The National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) will hold its 43rd Annual Conference Oct 6-9 at the Nashville DoubleTree Hilton Hotel. The event will commemorate Tennessee’s pivotal role in the ratification of the 19th Amendment and honor the women who serve the Tennessee judiciary. The conference will feature educational programming, including highlights of the dramatic conflict that unfolded in Nashville during the summer of 1920. A number of social networking events also are planned. The event is open to the bench and bar.

The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will conduct two clinics this week for those with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. Tomorrow, the group will hold a phone clinic at 2 p.m. CDT. The first 15 callers will be accepted. Then on Wednesday, the group will hold a clinic for veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203. Tomorrow is Constitution Day! Among the activities being planned is a free webinar from the the American Bar Association beginning at 12:30 p.m. EDT. The session, which will focus on freedom of the press, will look at the challenges and threats faced by the American media, the arrest and harassment of reporters covering social justice demonstrations, reforms to libel law, and the denial of access to public records, hearings and trials due to the pandemic. Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) will host a virtual fundraiser on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. CDT. “Oye Vecino LIVE” will feature an evening of live music, followed by a panel discussion on immigration in America. Attendees will enjoy tunes by Grammy-award winning artist Giovanni Rodriguez and a compelling panel discussion with Valentina Harper of Valentina Design, Karla Ruiz of Karla’s Catering and Dr. Alex Jahangir. Panelists will share their personal immigration stories and conduct an open discussion. Oye Vecino is a Spanish language podcast launched by JFON in 2020. The Knoxville Bar Association’s Diversity in the Profession Committee will present "Difficult Conversation" on Oct. 15 from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. The free event will feature Dr. Avice Reid, who will discuss racial disparities, circumstances that create them, how those served by the legal profession have changed, and how to create an environment of trust, accountability and empathy. Reid is immediate past chair of Leadership Knoxville. She formerly served as senior manager of information technology at the Tennessee Valley Authority and senior director of community relations for the city of Knoxville.

Registration is open through Sunday for the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services' annual Equal Justice University conference, which will take place virtually Sept. 21-23. The pre-conference kicks off Monday and runs through Friday. Sessions offered will include an update on trust account ethics rules, a review of the importance of medical evaluation in Social Security disability advocacy, a general review of the Rules of Civil Procedure and strategies for handling unemployment overpayments. Co-sponsored by the TBA, the conference also will include presentation of the 2021 Access to Justice Awards.
