Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris’ office will host a “Southern Justice Summit Awards Ceremony” this Friday to honor leaders in criminal justice reform. This year’s virtual summit, which is free to attend, will feature a keynote address by trial lawyer Ben Crump. Honorees include Innocence Project Director of Special Litigation Vanessa Potkin, state Sen. Raumesh Akbari, D-Memphis, attorney Michael Scholl, and Shelby County Criminal Court Clerk Heidi Kuhn.

YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee will present “Stand Against Racism: Mental Health and People of Color” on Nov. 30 from noon to 1 p.m. CST. The program will explore the challenges that people of color face when seeking mental health care. Speakers include Sharon Roberson, president and CEO of the YWCA; Dr. Tiffany Williams, Tennessee State University assistant professor; mental health practioner Dr. Bearlyn Ash; and public health specialist Dr. Desiree Kelly. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold two clinics this week. A phone clinic will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. to provide general advice. The first 15 callers will be accepted. On Wednesday, a clinic will be held specifically for veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203. The Knox County General Sessions Court will hold an informal reception honoring the retirement of Judge Geoffrey Emery on Dec. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. EST. The event will take place in the Small Assembly Room of the City-County Building, 400 Main St. SW, Knoxville 37902. Light refreshments will be served. Emery is retiring Dec. 31, choosing not to complete his full term, which would expire in August 2022.

The Tennessee Supreme Court will hold virtual admission ceremonies next week for individuals who recently passed the Tennessee bar exam. The court begins the process on Monday with four sessions, followed by sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. Sessions will take place at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. CST each day. TBA President Sherie Edwards and President-elect Tasha Blakney will be introducing and making motions on behalf of applicants across the state. Want to tune in for the proceedings? The American Bar Association (ABA) will host a Veterans Day program tomorrow at 11 a.m. CST. “Judges in the Military: Perspectives on Careers, Family and Life After,” will feature four military judges who will discuss their paths to the bench, including the stresses of military life and the challenges of transitioning to civilian life. Judges include: Benes Z. Aldana, former chief trial judge of the U.S. Coast Guard; Kirsten Brunson, former circuit judge with the U.S. Army; Judge Michael Lewis of the U.S. Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals; and Linda Strite Murnane (moderator), former chief circuit judge for the U.S. Air Force. The Vanderbilt Undergraduate Mock Trial Team will host the Grand Ole Tournament in Nashville on Nov. 13 and 14. The collegiate mock trial competition will take place at the Davidson County Courthouse and volunteers are needed to serve as both scoring judges and presiding judges. Rounds will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 6 p.m.; and on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 5 p.m. All times central. Coffee, breakfast and lunch will be provided.
