The Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians will honor retired Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon G. Lee at a luncheon on Oct. 3. According to Knox TN Today, Lee, a former Girl Scout herself, is being recognized for her achievements in law and her role as a role model. “Justice Lee is a great example of a Girl Scout who grew into a distinguished leader in her field and paved the way for future generations, which is the very essence of what Girl Scouting represents,” said CEO Lynne Fugate. The luncheon will be held at The Foundry in Knoxville and is open to the public. Tickets are available at TrefoilSociety.org. Last week, the group honored Johnson City Juvenile Court Judge Judge Sharon Green. WJHL has a report from that event.

Join West Tennessee Legal Services (WTLS) for its inaugural Disaster Law Seminar on Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. CDT. Attorney Jessi Pruett will discusses heirship property issues; WTLS attorneys Matthew Flood and Michael Creasy will present an overview of disaster legal work, FEMA appeals and working with the community after a disaster; and Vickie Trice and Jennifer Ramcharan from the Department of Commerce and Insurance will discuss working with insurance companies after a disaster. Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors (TNJFON) seeks to raise $50,000 at its annual Oye Vecino LIVE fundraiser on Sept. 19. The event, which features a panel discussion, music and food, aims to support the organization's mission of providing free or low-cost immigration legal services. This year's goal is higher due to increased operational costs and the absence of previous fundraising events. The organization already has raised over $32,000 toward its goal. The event will take place at the Fourth Story Theater at the West End United Methodist Church in Nashville. More information and the link to register are available online.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump will premiere his documentary "How to Sue the Klan" at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Sept. 17. According to Chattanoogan.com, the film chronicles a landmark legal victory by five Black women who sued the Ku Klux Klan in 1982 for violence and intimidation. A panel discussion featuring Crump and the film's director will follow the screening. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

Maryville College will welcome three jurists, retired Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon G. Lee, Belmont University College of Law Associate Professor David L. Hudson Jr. and Tennessee Court of Appeals Judge W. Neal McBrayer on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. EDT in the Lambert Recital Hall of the Clayton Center for the Arts as part of its Constitution Day celebration. The panel, which is open to the public, will delve into four recent Supreme Court cases and their impact on the First Amendment, according to Knox TN Today.

The TBA Health Law Section has partnered with organizations across the state to provide free advance health care directive clinics in each of Tennessee’s grand divisions. The section is seeking volunteer lawyers to assist with the effort. No previous experience is necessary and there will be experts on hand to answer questions. The first clinic will take place in Knoxville on Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon EDT. A Nashville clinic will follow on Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT. The Tennessee Racial and Social Justice Collective will host a community roundtable discussion on Sept. 28 at Lane College in Jackson to address issues impacting Black citizens in rural West Tennessee. The event, titled "Defending DEI: Anti-Blackness and Systemic Racism in Rural West Tennessee," will feature discussions on diversity, equity and inclusion; health disparities; voting rights; economics; and the justice system.
